Despite initial searches, no wreckage of the 10-seat Jet Commander was found. The lake froze four days later. Over 17 more searches took place. Recently, underwater searcher Garry Kozak and his team used a remotely operated vehicle to find the wreckage of a jet with a matching paint scheme in the lake, close to where the plane was last tracked. Sonar images were taken of the wreck found in 200 feet of water near Juniper Island.
Kozak stated on Monday that with all the evidence, they are 99% sure about the discovery. He mentioned that finding the wreckage provides closure and answers for the families. As per the reports of Yahoo Entertainment, Barbara Nikita, niece of pilot George Nikita, said in an interview on Tuesday that while they're grateful for the discovery, it also brings mixed feelings of peace and sadness as they come to terms with what happened.
