road safety measures, the Kerala government has decided that vehicles in the state will not be issued Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates if the owners have any pending challans. As per a TOI report, this decision was made during a meeting chaired by Transport Minister Antony Raju, as reported by Mathrubhumi.
The state has witnessed a decrease in the death rate from traffic accidents since the installation of AI cameras.
Between June 2023 and October 31, 2023, the state witnessed a decline in the number of fatal accidents, with 1,263 reported deaths compared to 1,669 during the same period in 2022. September 2023 saw a decrease from 365 fatalities in traffic accidents to 273, while October 2023 recorded a significant drop to only 85 deaths, as per reports.
It is important to note that these figures may fluctuate as several individuals are still receiving critical medical treatment in hospitals.
During the period from June to October, the AI cameras detected a total of 7,432,371 traffic violations.
Out of these, officials reviewed 5,829,926 cases, uploading 2,306,023 instances onto the Integrated Transport Monitoring System and issuing fines for 2,103,801 infractions. The government has collected approximately Rs 21.5 crore in penalties thus far.
Among the observed violations in October, the most common offense was riding two-wheelers without helmets, with a count of 21,865.
