Ricky Ponting is disappointed over the clash between the IPL 2025 mega auction and the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He labelled the scheduling as «the worst possible case scenario». The clash has forced Ponting, former Australian coach Justin Langer and other key personalities like Australia bowling coach Daniel Vettori to prioritise their IPL commitments over the crucial series-opener. The IPL auction is scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It will have Ponting (head coach of Punjab Kings), Langer (coach of Lucknow Super Giants), and Vettori (coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad) absent from significant portions of the Perth Test. Ponting and Langer will do the commentary for Channel 7 on the first day of the first Test before flying to Jeddah.

markets FIVE Strategy Cycling PAM testing Features Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Will struggling Marnus Labuschagne re-discover his mojo at Perth?
Australia prepares to take on India during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at Perth's Optus Stadium, a batter extremely crucial in deciding the match would be the Aussie number three Marnus Labuschagne, currently ranked at number 10 in Test rankings and considered as the glue of the batting line-up along with Steve Smith, keeping an attacking, high on intensity unit together. The 30-year-old Labuschagne has not been in the best of form as of late. Since his side's ICC World Test Championship win in 2023 against India in July, Marnus has gone on to display an average run of form during the next WTC cycle, having made just 653 runs in 12 matches, averaging a sub-par 29.68, with a century and five fifties in 24 innings, with best score of 111. His century came against arch-rivals England during the Ashes at Manchester in July, more than an year ago.

UPS stars testing Features International cricket "That's what superstars generate, create all over the world...": Ponting on media hype about Virat in Australia
Ricky Ponting pointed out that star India batter Virat Kohli is popular in Australia because of his passionate and aggressive approach to the game, especially to its longest format. After a disastrous home season with the bat against Bangladesh and New Zealand and underwhelming Test numbers over the years, which includes just two centuries, Virat would be making his fifth and one of his toughest tours to Australia. All the speculation around Virat's form, future in Test cricket and lack of centuries have not affected his hype in Australia as newspapers feature posters and attractive images/slogans highlighting the larger-than-life status the batter enjoys in Australia. Ponting spoke with host Sanjana Ganesan on the most recent episode of The ICC Review and the Australian legend spoke glowingly of the former India captain ahead of the upcoming battle for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) is one such team that has boasted several big names over the years but hasn’t left a significant mark on the league. However, the beauty of sport lies in its opportunities for redemption, and with the IPL 2025 auction just days away, PBKS fans are hopeful that their team will get it right this time. Known for their bold moves in the auction, PBKS has set the stage for an exciting rebuild under the guidance of their new head coach, Australian legend Ricky Ponting. PBKS has struggled with consistency over the years, reaching the IPL final only once, in 2014. Since then, they haven’t made the playoffs and finished ninth in the last season, with just five wins in 14 matches. This year, they released all their big stars, giving them a Rs 110 crore purse and four Right-to-Match (RTM) cards, setting the stage for a potentially game-changing auction.

markets FIVE Digital AVP performer cricket Struggling Shafali Verma dropped from Indian women's team for ODI series in Australia next month
Shafali Verma was on Tuesday dropped from India's 16-member women's team for the three-match ODI series in Australia in December after a string of poor performances in the past year. The BCCI selectors seem to have once again lost patience with the 20-year-old right-handed batter, whose recent ODI form has been disappointing. Shafali has scored just 108 runs in six matches this year with 33 being the highest. She was dropped in December last year from the team midway during the home ODI series against Australia on the basis of her poor run, before making a comeback against South Africa in June this year in Bengaluru. In fact, the youngster, rated as the next big thing in Indian women's cricket when she broke into the team in 2021, has not scored a ODI half century since making an unbeaten 71 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in July 2022. Her next highest score was a 49 against the same opponent in the same series.

Travis Head on Monday backed Virat Kohli to «have his moments in the series» as the Indian superstar continued to dominate talks in the run-up to the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting here on Friday. Kohli's ordinary returns with the bat this year in Test cricket notwithstanding, the 36-year-old has been the cynosure of all eyes since the Indian team landed in Australia last week. Head threw his support behind the Indian batting mainstay, who managed a mere 93 runs across three Tests against New Zealand at a forgettable average of 15.50 in his last assignment at home just before the tour of Australia. «No doubt, we will go through all their players, cannot wait to start well against them. Virat's going to have his moments in this series, hopefully not too many of them,» Head told the media at the Optus Stadium after Australia's training session.
