GSMA terms WRC decisions on spectrum as groundbreaking
World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) will allow the mobile sector to plan the next wave of communications development through 5G-advanced and beyond, global telecom industry body GSMA said today. Terming the decision of WRC identifying the upper 6 GHz band for IMT or mobile use as “groundbreaking”, GSMA said it would serve as a critical developmental trigger for manufacturers of the 6 GHz equipment ecosystem. “WRC-23 took strong action to meet mobile data growth by identifying additional mid-band spectrum for mobile,” GSMA said in a statement. As per decisions taken during the WRC-23, which concluded Friday in Dubai, final harmonisation of the 3.5 GHz band (3.3-3.8 GHz) – the pioneer 5G band – was achieved across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as well as throughout the Americas. “Notably, a new band – the 6 GHz band (6.425-7.125 GHz) – was identified for mobile in every ITU Region – EMEA, the Americas and the Asia Pacific.

Rs 4,000 crore a day! FIIs making it a December to remember for Nifty bulls
Sensex beyond the 71,000 mark and making 21,000 the new pincode for Nifty, FIIs (foreign institutional investors) have been pouring in over Rs 3,900 crore daily on an average in December, making the 30-pack index stronger by 4,000 points so far in the month. NSDL data shows that in the first 10 days of the month, FIIs invested Rs 39,260 crore on Dalal Street. And now with the US Fed hinting at 3 rate cuts in 2024, the market could once again see a flood of foreign money chasing Indian stocks in the new year. The sharp uptick in FII flows comes after November's Rs 9,000 crore inflow and non-stop selling in September and October months. «This market has made a high despite the fact that we have yet to see significant FII inflows.

Surrendering insurance policy early may cost you less in future
Irdai) has proposed new rules to safeguard the interests of policyholders. Under these rules, insurance companies will have to increase the amount they pay to customers who choose to discontinue their policy early. The new rules would put insurers in a dilemma — they must either lower sales or lower profits to address premature policy closures.

ETMarkets AIF Talk: Goal congruence among regulators essential to drive foreign interest in GIFT City: Abans Group
Over the past decade, India has been one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is becoming the most sought after investment destination for foreign investors. The GIFT International Financial Services Centre in Gujarat is a step in the direction of attracting higher foreign capital. Abhishek Bansal, Chairman, Abans Group believes that aligning policies and regulations with international standards, is one of the essential aspects to drive investments. “One crucial aspect for enhancing foreign investors’ interest in GIFT City is achieving goal congruence between national regulatory agencies and the GIFT regulator,” says Bansal. Such an approach ensures investor-friendly policies that meet global expectations and foster confidence and interest among foreign investors in GIFT City, he said. Edited excerpts: Notwithstanding certain regulatory hiccups, the last couple of years has been quite good for the AIF industry. Can you share some of the trends to watch out for the segment in 2024? Over the past years, the AIF industry in India has defied regulatory challenges, witnessing significant growth. Investors, including institutions and high-net-worth individuals, are increasingly drawn to alternative investments, seeking diversification beyond traditional assets. Sector-specific funds focusing on areas like technology and healthcare have gained popularity, offering targeted exposure and potential high returns.

Who is going to win the market race? Valuation or past performance? Nilesh Shah explains
Nilesh Shah, MD, Kotak AMC, says “India today is trading at a premium valuation to others as the Spider Man movie said “with great power comes great responsibilities.” With higher valuation, comes higher expectations. Our headwind will be to deliver on those expectations. We are like Suryakumar Yadav or Virat Kohli, we are supposed to score a century every time we come to bat; a 10-run, 30-run cameo is not good enough.” Just taking a cue from your last tweet, who is going to win the race? Valuation or past performance? That is a very-very tough question.

Will both India EPS and PE have tailwinds from here? Maneesh Dangi answers
Maneesh Dangi, Founder, Macro Mosaic Investing & Research, says “we are entering a very longish bond rally and much of the pain of 2022 would unwind in 2024… On currency also, we are perhaps entering a very longish dollar bear market. And there is a small chance that the dollar actually does somewhat well in the US recession, but otherwise in a very-very long US bear market and that will actually help us emerging market currencies pretty significantly.” What a change in stance by the Fed! Were you expecting it? Yes, incidentally, I sort of made this prediction on your channel a week ago. I have made this point a couple of times in the last two months that we are closer to the Fed pivot, closer to a deep dive in US interest rates. People often think that more of today will continue tomorrow but at times, of course, these things change and typically rate these oscillating variables. I was expecting this, I have written about it extensively and I think rates in the US are headed much lower from where they are today. They have already rallied quite substantially but a significantly rally ahead. A US economy cannot absorb such high interest rates and the Fed had to recognise and they did once they have begun to side that inflation is sort of in control right now.

Beyond IPOs and FPOs, Ashish Kacholia, Zerodha invest in NPO which gives zero return
IPOs hitting Dalal Street in the last few days of December, star investor Ashish Kacholia and broking firm Zerodha have quietly invested in an NPO which got listed on the Social Stock Exchange this week. NPO stands for not-for-profit organisation and investors can't expect anything in return for buying zero coupon zero principal (ZCZP) instruments. Unlike investments in IPOs, FPOs and NFOs, you don't get any interest, capital appreciation, dividend or even your capital back. The instrument, however, does get credited to demat accounts of investors but its value will become zero after the project for which the fundraiser was done gets completed. On Wednesday, Bengaluru-based NPO SGBS Unnati Foundation, which runs vocational training programs for unemployed, raised Rs 1.8 crore from two HNIs and another two institutional investors. Smallcap czar Kacholia, known for his multibagger picks, invested Rs 30 lakh while Zerodha generously invested Rs 1 crore.
