Stricter capital rules for US banks are a lazy way to keep them safe
SVB) shows, sometimes even supervisors are unaware of the risks a bank is taking, or are unable to stop it when they see it. Moreover, capital regulation will often fail to limit a bank’s pursuit of tail risks that earn profits in good times, because those earnings will add to its capital and allow it to take still more risks—at least until the bad times come. Finally, insofar as more capital gives bank management a longer leash, higher capital requirements may come with an offsetting cost.

Hold your horses, Fed's not done yet
Federal Reserve that its rate-tightening cycle may be over. This may appear premature with inflation beyond target, but the Fed is calibrating its policy to the expansionary fiscal stance that is driving up treasury yields. Government borrowing may avert a hard landing for the US economy as consumption is squeezed further.

Signs of stress in small ticket personal loans: Report
Small ticket borrowers are slowly starting to miss their repayments and seen to be delaying repayments beyond a month of the scheduled date. For consumers having at least one small-ticket personal loan, the balance-level delinquency rate or the percentage of borrowers missing a repayment was 5.4% in Q2’ 2003-24, up 120 bps (basis points) since Q2 2022-23 a report by credit bureau Transunion Cibil notes. During Q2’ 2023, overall balance-level serious delinquencies (measured as 90 days or more past due) improved across product categories, except for credit cards and personal loans according to the report. But delinquencies on small-ticket personal loans have a marginal impact on the overall retail loan portfolio, which looks at the outstanding balances of all retail products including home loans, auto loans, credit cards, personal loans, and others. Small-ticket personal loans of less than Rs 50,000 account for 0.3% of the total retail loan book size at an industry level. Even though delinquencies on small-ticket personal loans have a marginal impact on the personal loan portfolio, these need to be monitored closely, especially because consumers may prioritize other payment obligations ahead of personal loan payments, which in turn may be a wider indicator of financial stress, the credit bureau report said. The credit industry landscape has changed significantly over the last four years.

Delhi HC seeks Gail’s response on ArcelorMittal’s plea for LNG supply
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India on Thursday moved the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on GAIL (India) Ltd's notice to terminate a 2022 agreement for supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for its steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat. The steel manufacturer wants a direction to GAIL to continue supply of LNG, particularly in November, till the arbitration tribunal decided the dispute between them. It has also asked the high court to restrain the central public sector undertaking from taking any coercive action, including exhausting and alienating the LNG quantity which allegedly the state-owned firm is duty-bound to supply to it. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna after hearing the arguments for the interim stay asked GAIL to respond to the ArceorMittal’s petition by Monday.
