Why banks flag business expenses paid on personal credit cards
Credit cards come in two broad categories – personal and business. The fine print of personal credit cards clearly says that they cannot be used for business spending, and hence separate cards are issued for business expenses. However, the majority of self-employed or business owners bill some of their business expenses to their personal cards. This begs the question: How do banks allow this?

India slams developed countries for climate crisis at ICJ hearing
ICJ) on Thursday, saying they exploited the global carbon budget, failed to honour climate-finance promises and are now demanding that developing countries restrict their resource use. The court is examining what legal obligations countries have to address climate change and the consequences if they fail. India also urged the ICJ to avoid creating new obligations that go beyond the existing climate-change framework. «The court may exercise due caution to avoid devising new or additional obligations beyond what is already agreed under the existing climate-change regime, which take into consideration historic emissions, climate justice and the principal principle of equity and CBDR-RC, as well as the equitable access to the global carbon budget,» the country said.

Need to go beyond 'band-aid' to address liquidity: Economists
RBI) will have to infuse more liquidity into the banking system through additional measures as the expected impact of the 50-basis-point cash reserve ratio (CRR) cut announced Friday will likely wane within a few months, economists said. The central bank will likely use other liquidity instruments, like open market operations (purchases), foreign exchange swaps, and long-term variable rate repo auctions (VRR), they said. The RBI in its policy statement on Friday said that it will continue to be 'nimble and proactive' in its liquidity management operations to ensure that money market interest rates evolve in an orderly manner. Speaking to the media soon after announcing the policy, Governor Shaktikanta Das declined to give more details on the likely liquidity operations by the RBI.

Budget 2025: CII urges govt to stick to fiscal deficit target
fiscal deficit target of 4.9 per cent of GDP for 2024-25 and 4.5 per cent for 2025-26, cautioning that «overly aggressive targets» beyond these could adversely affect India's economic growth. «India has been growing rapidly amidst a slowing global economy. Prudent fiscal management for macroeconomic stability has been pivotal to this growth,» said Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, elaborating on suggestions for the forthcoming Union Budget. CII also highlighted the announcement in the Union Budget 2024-25 to keep the fiscal deficit at levels that help reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio. In preparation for this, the forthcoming budget could lay out a glide path to bring the central government's debt to below 50 per cent of GDP in the medium term (by 2030-31), and below 40 per cent of GDP in the long term, CII has suggested.

Space for all: 'Startups going for IPO will absorb smaller startups' Accel Partners
IPO) in 2024, venture capitalists are betting big on the growing Indian ecosystem. Karnataka’s Vision Group chair and cofounder of Accel Partners India, Prashanth Prakash, said that while there is a need for unicorns and soonicorns, there is also an equal opportunity for small startups that are leading the intellectual property (IP)-driven growth for deep tech. «There was a time when, if you were not a large enough startup, you had no value. But I think that is changing. Startups going IPO today will buy smaller companies to expand their scope. It’s not bad anymore to build small,» Prakash said while speaking at Ramaiah Institute of Technology during the Ramaiah Evoluate Incubator's startup awards on Thursday. He added that India is moving beyond a focus on consumer startups and easy opportunities to deep technology, manufacturing, and engineering-led ventures. «By 2025, we could see another 30 to 40 companies from India going public, reflecting the maturing of our startup ecosystem,» the Co-founder of Accel claimed, adding that India stands to gain from the China Plus One strategy.
