Asian Games football: China thrashes under-prepared and jaded India 5-1
Asian Games football competition here on Tuesday.Giao Tianyi (17th min), Dai Weijun (51st min), Tao Qianglong (72nd and 75th minute) and Hao Fang (90+2) scored for the hosts, while Rahul KP's (45+1 minute) equaliser from an acute angle was possibly the best strike of the match. It was heartening to see a third-string team holding the title contenders on an even keel during the first 45 minutes, which saw Indian custodian Gurmeet Singh Chahal valiantly save a spot-kick taken by rival captain Zhu Chenjie. India now need to beat Bangladesh and Myanmar in their remaining two games to qualify for the second round. Myanmar beat Bangladesh 4-2 in another game in this group. Having reached the Games Village late on Monday evening, the third-string Indian team, with not even four specialist defenders in their ranks, didn't have enough co-ordination amongst themselves. They looked jet-lagged, not rested enough and there was no way that there could have been a miracle.

Manipur forest department dismisses Editors' Guild of India report
Manipur government has denied allegations made by a fact-finding team of the Editors' Guild of India (EGI) that the state government did not follow due process in declaring parts of hilly areas as «reserved» and «protected» forests. Manipur's principal chief conservator of forests S.S. Chhabra in a seven-page letter to the Manipur government said the allegations against the forest department in the report — published by the three-member EGI team after a recent four-day visit to in the state — are «wrong» and «unverified», and they have «led to misinformation… and tarnished the reputation of the forest department. The EGI report, which was released recently, alleged the state government of branding all Kuki tribals as „illegal immigrants“ after about 4,000 refugees who fled the military coup in neighbouring Myanmar crossed into Manipur.

Southeast Asians wary of new conflicts as big powers join ASEAN summit
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov joined the summit in the Indonesian capital led by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), along with leaders of other partner countries. Tensions have accompanied the talks on issues from trade and technology, to China's increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea, the Myanmar junta's refusal to cooperate with ASEAN on a peace plan, the war in Ukraine, and suspicion that North Korea plans to supply weapons to Russia. Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries have warned this week of «destructive» rivalries between major powers, a reference to U.S.-China tensions that they say puts them in danger. «We all have a responsibility to not create new conflict, new tension, new war and at the same time we also have a responsibility to reduce tensions,» Widodo, as chair of the 10-member ASEAN bloc this year, said at the beginning of the East Asia Summit. Cooperation and multilateralism risked being replaced by «the rule of the strong». «The world will be destroyed if conflicts and tensions in one place are taken to another place,» he said in closing the summit. On Wednesday, China's Li warned against starting a «new Cold War» and warned countries against taking sides in any conflict. Harris, attending in place of President Joe Biden, reiterated her country's «enduring commitment» to Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific. A White House official said earlier the U.S.

Myanmar angry with Pakistan over 'unfit' fighter jets supplied by Islamabad: Report
JF-17 Thunder, supplied to Myanmar by Pakistan were declared unfit and the military junta has sent a «stern message» to Islamabad to answer for the mess, Myanmar-based Narinjara News reported citing sources. Pakistan supplied many JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft to Myanmar between 2019 and 2021 and all have been declared «unfit for operations.» The delivered planes were part of a deal that the Burmese military junta signed in 2016 to purchase JF-17 produced jointly by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corporation of China. But soon after the delivery of the aircraft, the Burmese Air Force was forced to ground the planes as malfunctions and structural flaws were detected. The failure of JF-17 appears to be shimmering tensions between Islamabad and Naypyidaw and somehow compelled China to intervene. A recent visit by Myanmar's Chinese envoy to Naypyidaw is said to have carried a message from the CCP's top leadership to Gen Min Aung Hlaing, as per Narinjara News. According to sources, Pakistan is trying hard to renegotiate the deal with newer versions of the JF-17s.
