Karnataka bans artificial colours in Gobi Manchurian, Cotton Candy
Karnataka government on Monday banned the use of artificial colours, including Rhodamine-B, in foods like Gobi Machurian and cotton candy, after reports of health concerns due to the poor quality. The state’s move follows a similar ban imposed by Goa, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry last month, all of whom came down heavily on the popular Indo-Chinese dish. Karnataka Health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that such artificial colours were of poor quality and posed harms to public health, and warned of serious action against anyone who continues to use them in food production. Taking to social media platform X on Monday, he said violation of this ban may result in imprisonment for up to seven years and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh. According to the food safety and quality department, samples of 'Gobi Manchurian' and 'Cotton Candy' being sold across the state were collected and analysed in laboratories. “Out of 171 samples collected from Gobi Manchurian, artificial colours were detected in 107 samples. Similarly, out of 25 cotton candy samples collected, artificial colours were found in 15 samples,” a statement from the department said.

China protests to India over PM Modi's visit to Indian state Arunachal Pradesh
diplomatic protest with India over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Arunachal Pradesh last week, reiterating its claim over the area by saying India's moves will «only complicate» the boundary question. Prime Minister Modi on Saturday dedicated to the nation the Sela Tunnel built at an altitude of 13,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh that will provide all-weather connectivity to strategically located Tawang and is expected to ensure better movement of troops along the frontier region. The Rs 825 crore tunnel, constructed on the road connecting Assam's Tezpur to West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, is being billed as the longest bi-lane road tunnel in the world at such an altitude. The Sela Tunnel will provide for better movement of troops and weaponry to various forward locations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, according to military officials.

At US universities, record numbers of Indian students seek brighter prospects and overseas jobs
Pranay Karkale is spending years of savings and $60,000 in student loans to pursue a master’s degree in the United States, yet he considers himself lucky. At home in India, it’s common to hear about families selling off their land to send children to universities overseas. Karkale was willing to do whatever it took once he got into Johns Hopkins University. A degree from a prestigious U.S. college, he believed, would open doors to a better job and higher pay than he would find in India.
