Israel acting 'beyond scope of self-defence': China
Israel-Hamas War: Israel's actions in Gaza have gone «beyond the scope of self-defence» and the Israeli government must «cease its collective punishment of the people of Gaza», China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in remarks published Sunday. Wang's remarks, made on a call to his Saudi Arabian counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Saturday, came as Israel appeared poised for a ground offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza. «Israel's actions have gone beyond the scope of self-defense,» Wang said according to a foreign ministry readout «It should listen earnestly to the calls of the international community and the UN secretary general, and cease its collective punishment of the people of Gaza,» he added in the strongest stance China has expressed so far on the conflict. More than one million people in the northern part of the crowded enclave have been ordered to flee ahead of the expected assault, an exodus that aid groups said would set off a humanitarian disaster.

Chinese envoy to visit Middle East next week to push peace talks: State media
Zhai Jun will visit the Middle East next week to push for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict and promote peace talks, state broadcaster CCTV reported Sunday. Zhai «will visit the Middle East next week to coordinate with various parties for a ceasefire, to protect civilians, ease the situation, and promote peace talks,» CCTV said in a video posted to its official social media account on Sunday. The CCTV report came as Israel appeared poised for a ground offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza. More than one million people in the northern part of the crowded enclave have been ordered to flee ahead of the expected assault, an exodus that aid groups said would set off a humanitarian disaster. The cramped and impoverished territory, where 2.3 million residents live on top of each other, has been under a land, air and sea blockade since 2006. The latest deadly Israeli salvos were sparked by a Hamas raid which saw fighters break through the heavily fortified border between the Gaza Strip and Israel and gun down, stab and burn to death more than 1,300 people. In Gaza, health officials said Israel's response had killed more than 2,200 people.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell calls Israel's evacuation plan 'utterly impossible'
Josep Borrell said Saturday that a plan by Israel to evacuate more than one million people out of northern Gaza in a single day was «utterly impossible to implement». Israel warned residents in the area to evacuate before an expected ground offensive against Palestinian Islamist organisation Hamas in retaliation for the deadliest attack in Israel's history. «I am saying that, representing the official position of the European Union… (the evacuation plan) is utterly, utterly impossible to implement,» Borrell told a press conference in Beijing on the final day of a three-day diplomatic visit to China. «To imagine that you could move one million people in 24 hours in a situation like Gaza can only be a humanitarian crisis,» he added. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen had expressed support to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday during a visit to the country. «Europe stands with Israel,» said von der Leyen, adding that the country had «a duty to defend its citizens». But Borrell's comments in Beijing showed the limits of that affirmation, saying that Israel was also obligated to follow international humanitarian law in the process of defending itself. «The position is clear,» said Borrell. «We certainly defend the right of Israel to defend itself.» «But, as any right, it has a limit.
