China leaves everyone behind in race for renewables income
Companies that make up the S&P 500 produce just 3.4% of their revenue from clean-energy sources, which is roughly half what companies on the Shanghai Composite Index earn, according to BloombergNEF. With corporations struggling to make the transition to net-zero emissions, analysts at BNEF looked under the hood of more than 8,000 companies to determine how much of their revenue is attributable to clean energy. “Shifting business models toward greener activities is about more than being virtuous for the sake of the planet,” says BNEF’s Michael Daly. “There’s a huge financial opportunity for companies that help drive the energy transition.”Chinese companies such as solar leaders LONGi Green Energy Technology Co.

India boosts coal use to stop power outages as hydroelectricity output falls
use of coal to generate electricity as an increase in renewables is struggling to keep pace with record power demand, according to Reuters reports. India's electricity demand typically peaks in May when people crank up air-conditioners to beat the heat. It is unusual for India's electricity use to spike in August when temperatures are lower due to the annual monsoon.

Myanmar angry with Pakistan over 'unfit' fighter jets supplied by Islamabad: Report
JF-17 Thunder, supplied to Myanmar by Pakistan were declared unfit and the military junta has sent a «stern message» to Islamabad to answer for the mess, Myanmar-based Narinjara News reported citing sources. Pakistan supplied many JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft to Myanmar between 2019 and 2021 and all have been declared «unfit for operations.» The delivered planes were part of a deal that the Burmese military junta signed in 2016 to purchase JF-17 produced jointly by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corporation of China. But soon after the delivery of the aircraft, the Burmese Air Force was forced to ground the planes as malfunctions and structural flaws were detected. The failure of JF-17 appears to be shimmering tensions between Islamabad and Naypyidaw and somehow compelled China to intervene. A recent visit by Myanmar's Chinese envoy to Naypyidaw is said to have carried a message from the CCP's top leadership to Gen Min Aung Hlaing, as per Narinjara News. According to sources, Pakistan is trying hard to renegotiate the deal with newer versions of the JF-17s.

Why cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are unlikely to disappear anytime soon
Bitcoin has not been cancelled. After the FTX collapse, I had written that I was happy crypto had not been officially regulated in India. However, it’s clear that apart from the taxation-based measures, there won’t be a crypto ban in India, unlike, say, in China.

Part of China's economic miracle was a mirage. Reality check is next
global financial crisis hit in 2008-09, it had already met most of its investment needs for its level of development, economists say. Since then, the economy quadrupled in nominal terms while overall debt expanded nine times. To keep growth high, China in the 2010s doubled down on infrastructure and property investment, at the expense of household consumption.

Italy moves to weaken China ties without upsetting Beijing
Antonio Tajani travels to China this weekend, he'll be balancing two competing interests: laying the ground for Italy’s exit from a controversial investment pact with Beijing while also trying to avoid a rupture with the world's second-largest economy. During a three-day trip starting on Saturday, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s deputy will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other officials to discuss the possibility of leaving the Belt and Road Initiative, an investment pact designed to deepen economic ties with allies. Just before boarding a plane to China, Tajani said that the 2019 agreement had fallen short of expectations. “Belt and Road was a decision made in the past,” Tajani told Francine Lacqua in a Bloomberg Television interview on Saturday at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, Italy.

Share of Russia crude in oil imports falls to 34 per cent in August
Russia's share in India's crude oil imports fell to 34% in August from 42% in July as state-run refiners sharply reduced imports from Russia. Supplies from Russia fell 23% month-on-month to 1.47 million barrels per day (mbd) in August, even as India's overall crude imports fell 5% to 4.35 mbd, according to energy cargo tracker Vortexa. Russia's seaborne crude exports to China, however, increased to 1.4 mbd in August from 1.3 mbd in July. Indian state refiners took 852,000 barrels per day of Russian oil in August, 30% less than in July while private sector refiners' intake of 617,000 barrels per day was 13% lower than in July. Imports from Russia fell due to the planned maintenance work at some refineries in India as well as a reduction in the availability of Russian supplies, analysts said.

PM Narendra Modi likely to focus on territorial integrity, freedom of navigation
Narendra Modi is expected to focus on safeguarding territorial integrity and freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific region during his September 6-7 Jakarta visit for the Asean Summit and East Asia Summit (EAS), in the backdrop of China's 'new standard map'. Besides India, several Southeast Asian nations, including Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia, have protested China's new map which focuses on the South China Sea region, Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin. India had lodged a strong protest with China. The PM is expected to send a message that territorial integrity of Indo-Pacific states must be safeguarded and pitch for inclusive nature of India's Indo-Pacific policy amid China's aggressive designs in the region, said people aware of the matter. India's steadfast commitment to freedom of navigation through the South China Sea region, where tensions have been building up, will also be in focus, said the people. The PM will also highlight India's agenda for the global south, with the Asean Summit taking place on the eve of G20 Summit in New Delhi. In June, the PM had addressed a gathering at the G20 development ministers' meeting in Varanasi and stated that «development is a core issue for the global south». «The countries of the global south were at the receiving end of the Covid pandemic.
