The youngsters have been key on their side's run to the final in Berlin and combined to send Spain ahead against England, a moment that felt fitting given their supreme summer. Williams' well-taken strike gave Spain a deserved lead and the duo both came close to extending it before Cole Palmer's equaliser for England.

Are football's big games the riskiest gig in music?
There is a gig. It is a very short gig: a tight six minutes or so. It is also unpaid. In exchange, though, the offer promises exposure that borders on priceless: a live crowd of about 70,000, and a captive television audience in the hundreds of millions. The appeal of serving as the pregame entertainment at one of European soccer's twin showpieces — the finals of the Champions League and the European Championship — is so obvious, and the benefits of that brief performance so extravagant, that the likes of Camila Cabello, Alicia Keys and the Black Eyed Peas (albeit without Fergie) have signed up to do it.

Taste currywurst & defeat in a Berlin Biergarten
Germany had been sailing through the Euro Championships, with only one team more imperious than them — the Spanish. Unfortunately, the draw meant they couldn't meet each other in the final. So a QF meeting had to do. From the morning you could see everyone and everything sporting the German tricolour, kids wearing Die Mannschaft kits. One German friend booked us a table in a restaurant-cum-biergarten where we had a prime view of the huge screen. 'Please get there early!' he had said. And sure enough, he was already there protecting our group's table when I reached. Under the awning of the beautiful gravel courtyard, the other tables behind us quickly filled up. When Germans want to feel good they eat the abominable currywurst. Sure enough, two people at our table order a plate each.

Germany stops planned sale of Volkswagen's gas turbine business to China
Volkswagen unit MAN Energy Solutions' gas turbine business to a Chinese company on Wednesday, with ministers citing security reasons. The decision comes amid rising trade tensions between the EU and China. Germany's economy ministry can review and stop transactions deemed to have national security implications, and Berlin and the EU are trying to reduce risks from economic ties with Beijing. The planned sale of the German business to Chinese state-owned CSIC Longjiang GH Gas Turbine Co (GHGT) was announced in June 2023 at an undisclosed price, but MAN Energy Solutions said in September the government would take a close look.

The Washington Consensus is dead: Long live the new Berlin Declaration
Paradigm shifts in mainstream economic thinking usually accompany crises demanding new answers, as occurred after stagflation—low growth and high inflation—gripped advanced economies in the 1970s. And it may be happening again, as liberal democracies confront a wave of popular distrust in their ability to serve their citizens and address the multiple crises— ranging from climate change to unbearable inequalities and major global conflicts—that threaten our future.
