The experience turn: A good news and a bad news for Indian retailers
consumer landscape is shifting in various ways which keeps retailers on toes. Recently released Household Consumption Expenditure Survey data showed Indians are spending less on food, particularly staples like rice and wheat, and more on discretionary items such as processed food, as well as durables like televisions and fridges. Already a premiumisation trend is sweeping across categories for the past few years. Charting out shifts in India's retail sector, a joint study by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Retailers Association of India (RAI) brings good news as well as bad news for Indian retailers. The good news is Indian retailers have a vast business growth opportunity to capture. India continues to be a bright spot among top global economies with a robust GDP growth of 7% in 2023. It is projected to overtake Germany & Japan to claim the 3rd spot by 2030. Private consumption at the same time remains strong. India retail is expected to reach $2 trillion in the next 10 years and presents a large opportunity for retailers, says the report titled 'Unlocking the $2Tn retail opportunity in the next decade'.

Zero-emission ship nears finish of round-the-world voyage
FORT LAUDERDALE: A ship powered by renewable energy, including hydrogen produced onboard, is docked in the southeastern US state of Florida this week as it prepares to finish the last leg of a voyage around the world. The 100-foot catamaran, dubbed the Energy Observer, has logged 63,040 nautical miles without using fossil fuels since it first started sailing in 2017. This particular trip around the world started in 2020. The mission has tested renewable energy — including by using solar panels and advanced sails called "oceanwings" — as a power source in multiple climates off the coasts of Africa, Asia and Antarctica.

'Totally cold' is not too cold for winter swimmers competing in a frozen Vermont lake
frozen lake and swimming laps may not be everyone's good time but for winter swimmers who return year after year to a northern Vermont lake near the Canadian border, there's nothing better. The 10th annual Memphremagog Winter Swimming Festival kicked off Friday with the 200-meter (218-yard) freestyle race in a narrow pool cut from the ice. But the festivities started Thursday and on Friday morning some of the 180 participants swam a lap wearing a decorated hat. «It was amazing. It's the highlight of my year,» said Andie Nelson, of Arlington, Virginia, after swimming 25 meters (27 yards) in the hat competition. «It makes me happy.»

Passenger captures video of plane wing coming apart as United flight forced to land
United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Boston was diverted to Denver on Monday after the plane’s wing started coming apart mid-flight — and a passenger managed to capture footage of the unnerving issue.Kevin Clarke pulled out his phone to record video of damage to the plane’s structure, which appeared to show the wing slat missing large chunks and beginning to separate from the rest of the wing.“Just about to land in Denver with a broken wing on the plane,” Clarke can be heard saying in the video.Clarke told WCVB that as the wheels lifted off in San Francisco, he felt an “incredibly strong vibration” and started to become worried about the plane’s shaking.“All of a sudden I hear this loud vibration and noise that I’ve never heard from a plane before and it stopped within seconds and I’m like, well that’s good it stopped,” Clarke told ABC.He told the outlet that the plane’s pilot soon entered the cabin and checked out the wing from a window, before retreating back into the cockpit.“Minutes later, he comes on the PA system and announces that we’ve sustained some damage to the slat underneath the wing,” said Clarke.Another passenger shared a photo of the damaged wing on Reddit mid-flight.“Sitting right on the wing and the noise after reaching altitude was much louder than normal. I opened the window to see the wing looking like this,” user octopus_hug wrote.
