Excitel plans cable-to-fiber push, eyes two million new users on IPTV
Excitel, a Delhi-based home broadband provider, is gearing up to transform India’s cable TV households into fiber broadband users by replacing traditional set-top boxes with Android-enabled IPTV boxes. The company aims to onboard 2 million new users in 18 months through this hybrid model. “We want to replace legacy cable TV boxes with Android boxes and give users OTT, YouTube and live channels, all at the same price they pay today,” said Vivek Raina, CEO and co-founder of Excitel. “The user gets more, the cable operator runs just one network, and we grow faster without laying new fiber ourselves.” IPTV, or Internet Protocol Television, is a method of delivering television content over the internet offering an alternative to traditional cable or satellite TV. India’s largest telecom company Bharti Airtel also rolled out IPTV across 2000 cities last week.

Reflecting on his match-winning partnership with Ashutosh Sharma, Nigam, who made quickfire 39 off 15 balls, said, «My job was to make things easy for Ashutosh. Delhi court dismisses plea seeking prosecution of AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj for alleged defamation
Delhi court on Saturday dismissed a plea filed by a BJP leader seeking prosecution of AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj for allegedly making defamatory remarks against him in September 2018. Special judge Vishal Gogne turned down the petition filed by BJP's Suraj Bhan Chauhan against a trial court's February 19 order which rejected his complaint against Bharadwaj, citing delay in filing it. The limitation period was found to have lapsed on March 16, 2024, the court said while noting the magisterial court had already accorded the permissible liberal construction to the limitation period. The court finds the conduct of Chauhan to have been «whimsical and opportunistic» in filing the belated defamation complaint, regarding the press conference of the year 2018, only in December 2024 against respondent Saurabh Bharadwaj on the cusp of the Delhi Assembly elections in early 2025, the judge said. Chauhan had alleged that Bharadwaj defamed him in 2018 by falsely claiming at a press conference that an FIR had been lodged against him. He claimed before the special judge that he had «inadvertently» filed the complaint against Bharadwaj, a former Delhi minister, before Saket court instead of Rouse Avenue Court which came up for hearing in September 2020.

Stage-I GRAP order lifted in Delhi-NCR as air quality improves
Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has revoked the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage-I in Delhi-NCR after the national capital's Air Quality Index was recorded at 153 (moderate category) on Saturday. As of now, Stage I of GRAP is in force vide the order dated March 24, 2025. The CAQM mentioned that the AQI of the national capital showed significant improvement due to strong surface winds and improved meteorological conditions prevailing in Delhi-NCR. «The AQI of Delhi has been recorded as 153 for March 29 (in the 'Moderate' category). Further, the forecast by IMD/IITM also predicts AQI will mainly remain in the 'Moderate' category in coming days,» the CAQM said in a release. «The Sub-Committee, accordingly, decides to revoke its order dated March 24, 2025, invoking actions under Stage-I ('Poor' Air Quality) of the extant GRAP in the entire NCR, with immediate effect,» it said.

Myanmar-Thailand earthquake: Are quakes becoming too frequent?
Myanmar and Thailand on Friday has claimed more than a thousand lives so far. Myanmar’s Junta said on Saturday that at least 1,002 people had been killed and 2,376 others injured. The death toll and injuries are expected to rise. In Thailand, at least eight people died in the capital, where a high-rise building under construction collapsed. The devastation caused by the Myanmar-Thailand earthquake, shown in dozens of shocking videos and photos circulating on social media, has caused concerns in India too. India has recorded 159 earthquakes of varying magnitudes from November 2024 to February 2025, with the latest being a magnitude 4.0 in Delhi on February 17, as per a PIB press release. Many people have observed that earthquakes have been occurring more frequently in recent years. While it may seem like earthquakes are becoming more frequent, actual frequency of earthquakes may not have substantially increased. The feeling that earthquakes are becoming common could be due to more earthquakes being recorded and a heightened awareness of natural disasters due to social media. However, human activities like mining, dam building, and groundwater extraction can trigger earthquakes, leading to an increase in the number of human-induced earthquakes.

Relief for domestic flyers as regulator rejects Delhi Airport’s proposal for hike in charges for domestic flyers
Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) hasn’t allowed Delhi Airport to increase charges on domestic departing passengers from Rs 129 for the period of 2024-2029. The GMR group-owned airport had sought higher User Development Fee (UDF) ranging from from Rs405 to Rs 610 depending on peak hours and non-peak hours. UDF is a fee levied by operators to recover the expense they have incurred upgrading infrastructure at airports. A Parliamentary Affairs Committee had earlier expressed their dissatisfaction over “arbitrary” rise in user development fees (UDF) and ticket prices, arguing that the existing framework lacks mechanisms to hold private operators accountable.
