Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to custodial interrogation of the Enforcement Directorate till March 28. Terming Kejriwal as «kingpin and key conspirator» in the Delhi excise policy case, ED had sought 10 days' custody. Significantly, the remand paper filed by ED alleged that «Aam Aadmi Party has committed the offence of money laundering» through Kejriwal. This is the first time that the federal agency has accused AAP of money laundering in a court of law. As reported by ET on January 7, ED was contemplating invoking Section 70 (1) of PMLA to make AAP an accused in the case. As per the section: «Where a person committing a contravention of any of the provisions of this Act or of any rule, direction or order made thereunder is a company, every person who, at the time the contravention was committed, was in charge of, and was responsible to the company, for the conduct of the business of the company as well as the company, shall be deemed to be guilty of the contravention and shall be liable to be proceeded against and punished accordingly.»

Arvind Kejriwal continued as Delhi chief minister after his arrest, experts said that nothing barred him from remaining CM, though the future course of action would depend on Delhi's lieutenant-governor. Technically, Kejriwal can continue as CM till he is convicted in a case. However, there are other practicalities in administering a state from custody or jail. The jail manual lays down specifically that an undertrial is allowed meetings only twice a week. Conducting Cabinet meetings and maintaining secrecy of government files would be difficult if carried to the Tihar Central Jail. Undwrtrials are allowed only specific documents, including court applications and vakalatnamas. The practical difficulties, however, can be sorted if L-G Vinai Saxena exercises powers under the Prison Act to declare any facility as 'prison'. Former law officer of Tihar Central Jail Sunil Kumar Gupta told ET there have been at least two such precedents when earlier L-Gs exercised the power.

Delhi court on Friday sent Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to the Enforcement Directorate's custody till March 28, a day after his arrest in the excise policy-linked money laundering case. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja at the Rouse Avenue court said that Kejriwal will be produced before the court on March 28 at 2 p.m. During the proceedings, ED told a special PMLA court that Arvind Kejriwal is kingpin and key conspirator of Delhi liquor scam in collusion with his ministers, AAP leaders.

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has disaffiliated 20 schools, including five in Delhi, for enrolling dummy students and ineligible candidates, its secretary Himanshu Gupta said on Friday. The board has also downgraded the affiliation of three schools. «Pursuant to a surprise inspection conducted in CBSE schools across the country to check whether the schools are running according to the provisions and norms contained in the affiliation and examination bye-laws, it was found that some schools were committing various malpractices of presenting dummy students, ineligible candidates and not maintaining records properly,» Gupta said. «After a thorough inquiry, it has been decided to disaffiliate 20 schools and downgrade three schools,» he added.

Arvind Kejriwal arrest news: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced that they will gherao Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence at Lok Kalyan Marg on 26 March. AAP will not celebrate Holi this year, the party's Delhi convenor Gopal Rai said on Friday. Addressing a press conference in national capital Delhi, Gopal Rai alleged that MLAs and councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were stopped from meeting the family members of the Delhi chief minister, who was arrested by the ED in an excise policy-linked money-laundering case on Thursday.

Arvind Kejriwal can continue as Delhi chief minister post his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in an excise policy-linked money laundering case with legal experts on Friday saying there is no bar under the law which prohibits an arrested person from holding the post. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on Thursday hours after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him protection from any coercive action by the central probe agency. While senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan said there is no bar in law on a person continuing as chief minister once arrested, senior advocate Vikas Singh said though legally there is no bar, administratively it will be next to impossible. Kejriwal has not tender his resignation from the post of the chief minister. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said he will continue as the chief minister of Delhi and if need be, he will run the government from jail.

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien on Friday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of behaving like a «tin-pot dictator,» and said the BJP-led Centre was arresting opposition leaders in its desperation to secure win in the upcoming elections. «The Prime Minister is behaving like a tin-pot dictator, arresting opponents, election agents, transferring state government officials… Changing rules in desperation to win seats… Why?» said O'Brien, who is in Delhi for a meeting of opposition INDIA bloc leaders with the Chief Election Commissioner, a day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate. INDIA bloc parties are rallying behind Kejriwal, with the TMC making its first appearance with the opposition alliance partners since seat-sharing talks with Congress in West Bengal failed, and it announced going solo in the Lok Sabha polls. «The Director General of Police (DGP) West Bengal was changed thrice in 24 hours… Why wasn't the ED director changed?» the TMC Parliamentary Party leader in Rajya Sabha said.

Delhi Police has tightened security at the residence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday night. The police have implemented a two-tier security ring and are using drones for surveillance to maintain law and order. Sunil Jakhar on Friday said a party delegation will approach the Election Commission and seek an ED probe into the state's excise policy, which he claimed was tailored in lines with the one in Delhi. «For the (Delhi) excise policy which Kejriwal had to see this day, the same model has been replicated by their government in Punjab,» Jakhar told reporters here. Indian Railways has announced plans to run approximately 540 additional train services. These services will connect various key cities across the country, including Mumbai, Patna, Gaya, Katra, Varanasi, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Pune, and Ambala. Hitting back, the TMC said that such a statement reflected the «BJP's fear of losing» the Lok Sabha elections. Kejriwal, the national convenor of the AAP, was arrested by the ED on Thursday night in an excise policy-linked money laundering case. «Last month, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemmant Soren was arrested. Now, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been arrested. It only shows that being a chief minister doesn't grant you any sort of impunity if you are involved in corruption. Similar allegations of corruption have emerged in West Bengal in recent years. So, the state could also witness similar scenes like New Delhi,» Majumdar said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has withdrawn his plea from Supreme Court, a day after he was arrested in the Delhi Excise Policy case. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for Kejriwal told the SC that Kejriwal was withdrawing the petition in the Supreme Court as it is clashing with the remand. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on Thursday evening, and was taken to the agency's headquarters in New Delhi.
