Russian central bank hikes key interest rate by 100 bps to 8.5%
central bank raised its key interest rate by 100 basis points to 8.5% on Friday, raising the cost of borrowing as the weak rouble stoked inflationary risks from a tight labour market and strong consumer demand. It was the first time the bank had lifted rates in more than a year, having gradually reversed an emergency hike to 20% made in late February last year after Russia's decision to send tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine, which saw the West impose sanctions on Moscow. It had previously held rates at 7.5% since the last cut in September.

Russia warns ships in Black Sea, Ukraine to create temporary grains export route
Russia warned that ships sailing to Ukraine's Black Sea ports from Thursday will be seen as potential military targets, days after its withdrawal from a safe-passage deal that threatens to worsen global food supplies. Ukraine said on Wednesday it was establishing a temporary shipping route via Romania, one of the neighbouring Black Sea countries. «Its goal is to facilitate the unblocking of international shipping in the north-western part of the Black Sea,» Vasyl Shkurakov, Ukraine's acting minister for communities, territories and infrastructure development, said in a letter to U.N.

Russia warned that from Thursday any ships traveling to Ukraine's Black Sea ports will be seen as possibly carrying military cargoes after Ukraine said it was setting up a temporary shipping route to try and continue its grain exports. The moves by both countries on Wednesday came just days after Russia quit a deal — brokered by the United Nations and Turkey — that allowed the safe Black Sea export of Ukraine grain for the past year, and revoked its guarantees of safe navigation.
