NEW DELHI : The Cotton Association of India (CAI) released its final estimate of crop production for the 2022- 23 (October-September) season and pegged it slightly higher at 31.8 million bales (1 bale=170 kg) from its previous estimate of 31.1 million bales in July, and initial estimates of 34.4 million bales. This is against the government’s third advance estimate of 34.3 million bales for the 2022-23 season and the 2021-22 season industry production estimate of 29.9 million bales.

NEW DELHI : The International Monetary Fund (IMF) lifted its 2023-24 growth projection for India to 6.3% from its July estimate of 6.1%, citing “stronger-than-expected consumption" during the June quarter. In contrast, the agency expects global growth of 3% in 2023 and 2.9% in 2024, with advanced economies expanding by 1.5% in 2023 and 1.4% in 2024. The Washington-based agency presents India’s economic growth forecast on a fiscal year basis while it uses the calendar year for other economies.

NEW DELHI : India’s apex power planning body, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), has come up with guidelines for slope stability—inclines that can withstand movement—in hydropower projects after heavy rains and glacial lake floods damaged a dam in Sikkim. The guidelines said that in the case of projects that are “vulnerable", the project authority or developer would be responsible for examining the upper reaches, including the reservoir, identify fault sites and take remedial measures for stabilization.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) has increased to 18 branches across the country from nine in 2019, when Amit Shah took charge of the Union home ministry, while proposals for 10 more branches are pending with the ministry, said officials. The manpower for the NIA has also been enhanced, as the ministry recently approved creation of one post of additional director general and six new inspector generals of police for the agency, they said.

New Delhi: The lenders of the bankrupt airline Jet Airways, led by State Bank of India, have now moved to the Supreme Court, challenging the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) order dated August 28. According to a lawyer involved in the case, this new petition contests the NCLAT's order to allow the Jalan-Kalrock Consortium (JKC) to encash a performance bank guarantee of Rs 150 crore to pay off dues amounting to Rs350 crore to the lenders. This payment is a condition precedent for the transfer of ownership of the airline to JKC.
