Centre, states to informally discuss online gaming tax
New Delhi: The implementation of 28% goods and service tax (GST) on online gaming, horse racing and casinos will informally figure in discussions at Saturday’s GST Council meeting as the Centre is keen to see the new regime takes effect without hassles, said a person informed about Centre-state discussions. The idea is to see how far states have put their legislative changes in place for the contentious tax regime change which had dragged for several months before a divided GST Council cleared the new regime at its meeting on 2 August.

NCP symbol fight: EC hears Sharad Pawar, Ajit factions, next hearing on Monday
Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP has asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to not freeze the party symbol or name till the entire process of hearing the dispute of who is the real NCP is decided by the poll body. The development came during a hearing at the EC in New Delhi where Ajit and Sharad Pawar argued why their factions should be recognised as the real NCP. The Ajit Pawar camp, however, in its affidavit to the EC has asked it to rule in its favour highlighting the EC's order earlier this year when it gave the Shiv Sena name and party symbol to the Eknath Shinde faction as it had more MLAs and MPs than the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena. On Friday, the Sharad Pawar camp again argued that there was no split in the party and that the main NCP remains intact and is with the senior Pawar.

SC verdict on govt as secured creditor soon
New Delhi: The Supreme Court is set to rule whether the government can be considered a secured creditor when an insolvent company has not paid its dues. The judgment is expected to have a bearing across the bankruptcy resolution spectrum, since treating such dues on par with loans from secured creditors will diminish the payouts to the latter. Under India’s Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), secured creditors such as banks and financial institutions get priority in getting repaid through the resolution process, while unpaid dues to vendors, suppliers and government dues are treated as operational credit, and they fall lower in the so-called waterfall mechanism.

NEW DELHI : The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) monetary policy committee (MPC) is set to deliver its decision on the policy repo rate today, with the market expecting a status quo despite the surge in prices amid a hardening of bond yields. Mint explains: The panel is expected to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.50% for the fourth consecutive time as core inflation, which excludes food, fuel and light groups, has been below the central bank’s upper tolerance limit of 6% for six months.
