Has reality TV lost its plot in India?
New Delhi: In 2020, two of Indian television’s oldest properties, Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) and Bigg Boss, returned to home screens for the first time after the onset of the covid-19 pandemic, complete with downsized crews and isolated bubbles for sets. However, the much-anticipated comeback failed to enthuse media and entertainment industry experts, as the audience gave the reality shows a tepid reception. The inability to grab people by the eyeballs the way they used to earlier saw the television rating points (TRPs) of these shows plunge by at least 50%, according to broadcast network heads.

India emulating China's 'wolf warrior' diplomacy with Canada, sans the warfare
New Delhi’s decision to ask Canada to reduce its number of diplomats in India by over 40 is the latest in the downward spiral of India-Canada relations. There is now a danger that India’s words and actions are going well past the point of serving its long-term interests. Whatever the truth of the multiple allegations hurled at each other by India and Canada, the fact is that as the emerging power, an Asian one and a developing country still, the former cannot and must not lose sight of the fact that global institutional structures and narratives are still not entirely in its favour.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar Killing: Keep embassy staff equal, Canada told
India has asked Canada to reduce its number of diplomats across its missions in the country and repatriate 41 diplomats by early next week, saying it would revoke their diplomatic immunity if they stayed after the given date. This comes just weeks after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of a «potential» involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. While the Indian government is yet to issue a statement on its latest move, sources have indicated to ET that the decision to ask Canada to reduce its diplomats by October 10 is aimed at bringing the strength of Indian missions and Canadian missions on par. Indian missions in Canada have around 21 diplomats and the Canadian missions in India currently have 62 diplomats. Meanwhile, Trudeau went on the backfoot on Tuesday and said that his government was «not looking to escalate the situation» with India.
