The Letter of Request has been delivered to the French government a few days back and they are expected to decide on the Indian request and respond in the near future, top defence sources told ANI. The LoR is like a tender document in which the Indian government has specified all its requirements and capabilities that it would want to have in the Rafale Marine aircraft being acquired for the aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, they said. The Indian Navy and the Indian government are working in a fast-track mode to ensure that the acquisition contract is signed at the earliest and Indian carriers can operate the highly capable aircraft to ensure an edge for New Delhi in the Indian Ocean region. The aircraft deal worth around Euro 5.5 billion was cleared by the defence acquisition council just before the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to France as the state guest for their Bastille Day parade this year in July.

While supervising the operations of the «game changer» P-8I aircraft at Nacala Air Station INS Rajali ( Arakkonam Naval Air Station), Captain Ajayendra Kant Singh told ANI, «There is no possibility that any ship or a submarine would pass through the Indian Ocean region without 312 squadrons not knowing about it.» The Commanding Officer of INS 312 squadron, also known as Albatross, said that at any point in time, there is atleast one P-8I aircraft airborne to carry out surveillance of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal to keep an eye on all activities happening there. P-8I is known as the game changer aircraft for the Indian Navy as it has played a key role in carrying out surveillance in multiple areas of Indian interest from the high altitude areas in the Ladakh sector, revealing the level of Chinese build-up along the Sikkim-Bhutan sector during the Doklam crisis and frequent surveillance of the foreign warships and research vessels all along the Indian Ocean Region. The aircraft is also known as the Guardian of the Indian Ocean Region as it has flown more than 44,000 hours in the last 10 years to carry out surveillance over the Indo-Pacific region.

The two drones have been operated by the Indian Navy since November 2020 when the force got them on lease from the American firm General Atomics as part of the emergency procurement powers. «The aircraft has the capability to cover over 4,000-8,000 kms in one go and can operate for more than 30 hours in one stretch which allows them to cover the entire Indian Ocean Region in one go,» the second in command of the Navy's drone unit Lieutenant Commander Lokesh Pandey told ANI. Team covered the operations of the most advanced drone of the force here where the Predator showcased its capabilities. Asked about the 15 more advanced Predator MQ-9B drones that the force would be getting from the US under a tri-services deal, the first Mission Commander of the Predator drones in the country Lieutenant Commander Varsha said the new drones being planned would be equipped with weapons including air to ground missiles, bombs and submarine detection kits fitted with sonobuoys which can help detect the hidden enemy submarines. The Predator drones can be equipped with American Hellfire missiles, bombs and other high-level sensors which can be used for carrying out strikes from long ranges against enemy targets. The American forces have used drones to carry out countless strikes against terrorists like al-Qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahiri, and others.
