India's strategic positioning is key to maximising global trade opportunities: APCO Worldwide CEO
global trade landscape, and to maximise its position in trade realignments, it must strategically defend its key sectors while leveraging shifts in global supply chains, said Brad Staples, Chief Executive Officer of APCO Worldwide. Answering exclusive questions of ANI, Staples said, «India must fast-track its bilateral trade negotiations, „Fast-tracking Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and ensuring a stable, predictable trade environment will enhance India's appeal as a trusted global trade partner.“ The US is increasingly using tariffs as a strategic tool; it imposed 25 per cent duties on steel and aluminium and recently extended the same 25 per cent tariff to imported automobiles and automobile parts. It is also considering additional levies on pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. This presents both challenges and opportunities for India's trade landscape.

Trump tariff rollout to retaliate against India & others opens new era of risk for global economy
Donald Trump on Wednesday is set to announce the most expansive US trade restrictions in a century, at a stroke upending the postwar global trading system and posing difficult-to-predict economic risks. The administration’s plans to impose what Trump calls reciprocal tariffs have left investors, executives, government officials and consumers around the world guessing what lays ahead when he takes the podium at the 4 p.m. White House Rose Garden event. Deliberations are coming down to the wire, with the size and scope of new levies still being discussed Tuesday. Also Read: As tariff clock counts down, Trump is still up for 'a good negotiation' The lack of details so far on the structure, size and targets of the levies have left the world “flying blind” heading into the big announcement day, according to Nomura Holdings Inc. chief economist Rob Subbaraman. “The Trump administration’s proposed reciprocal tariffs mean different things to different people,” he wrote in a recent note to clients. While a direct approach means the US matching the levies that other nations impose on US goods, “we suspect the criteria for US reciprocal tariffs will be much broader than that, and indeed more difficult to quantify.”

Donald Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs are coming. What do these duties mean for you and USA economy?
Donald Trump has reiterated that Wednesday will be «Liberation Day» — a moment when he plans to roll out a set of tariffs that he promises will free the United States from foreign goods. The details of Trump's next round of import taxes are still sketchy. Most economic analyses say average U.S. families would have to absorb the cost of his tariffs in the form of higher prices and lower incomes. But an undeterred Trump is inviting CEOs to the White House to say they are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in new projects to avoid the import taxes. It is also possible that the tariffs are short-lived if Trump feels he can cut a deal after imposing them. What exactly does Trump plan to do? He wants to announce import taxes, including 'reciprocal' tariffs that would match the rates charged by other countries and account for other subsidies. Trump has talked about taxing the European Union, South Korea, Brazil and India, among other countries.

EU has 'strong plan' to hit back at US tariffs if needed, EU chief says
European Union has a «strong plan» to retaliate against tariffs imposed, and set to be imposed, by U.S. President Donald Trump, although it would prefer to negotiate a solution, EU executive chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday. The Trump administration put in place tariffs on imported steel and aluminium in March and higher duties on cars will take effect on Thursday. Trump will also set out plans for «reciprocal tariffs» on Wednesday. Von der Leyen said she understood U.S. arguments that others had taken advantage of global trade rules, adding the EU had suffered too. She also said she understood the U.S. wanted to re-industrialise, as does the EU. However, she said U.S. tariffs were taxes on its consumers that would fuel inflation and make American factories pay more for components, costing jobs. «Our objective is a negotiated solution. But of course, if need be, we will protect our interests, our people, and our companies,» von der Leyen said in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

India's April-February finished steel imports up nearly 16% y/y, data shows
finished steel imports during the first 11 months of the financial year, which began in April, stood at 8.98 million metric tons, marking a 15.8% year-on-year increase, according to provisional government data reviewed by Reuters on Tuesday. India, the world's second-biggest crude steel producer, became a net importer in 2023/24, a trend that has continued with rising shipments from China, South Korea and Japan. Last month, India recommended a 12% temporary tax on certain steel products for 200 days, known as a safeguard duty, in an attempt to curb imports. South Korea was the biggest exporter of the alloy to India during April-February, with shipments reaching 2.6 million metric tons, up 7.1% year-on-year, the data showed. Finished steel imports from China totalled 2.4 million metric tons, down 5.3% year-on-year, while imports from Japan reached 1.9 million metric tons, marking a nearly 70% year-on-year increase, the data showed.

France's Marine Le Pen found guilty in graft trial, awaits decision on potential ban from politics
Marine Le Pen guilty on Monday of misappropriating EU funds and the sentencing expected shortly could see her barred from the 2027 presidential race, upending politics in France. Le Pen, head of the far-right National Rally (RN), is the front-runner in opinion polls ahead of the 2027 vote. Prosecutors had asked that Le Pen face an immediate five-year ban from public office if found guilty, regardless of any appeal process, using a so-called «provisional execution» measure. Judges can adopt, modify or ignore the prosecutors' request. An automatic five-year ban would hammer Le Pen, 56, a three-time presidential contender who has said 2027 will be her final run for top office. She would retain her parliamentary seat until the end of her mandate. Le Pen, who did not speak to reporters as she arrived in court, has accused prosecutors of seeking her «political death», alleging a plot to keep the RN from power that echoes claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump about his legal woes.

How Trump supercharged distrust, driving US allies away
F-35, a fifth-generation fighter, was developed in partnership with eight countries, making it a model of international cooperation. When President Donald Trump introduced its successor, the F-47, he praised its strengths — and said the version sold to allies would be deliberately downgraded. That made sense, Trump said last week, «because someday, maybe they're not our allies.» For many countries wedded to the United States, his remark confirmed a related conclusion: that America can no longer be trusted. Even nations not yet directly affected can see where things are heading, as Trump threatens allies' economies, their defense partnerships and even their sovereignty. For now, they are negotiating to minimize the pain from blow after blow, including a broad round of tariffs expected in April. But at the same time, they are pulling back. Preparing for intimidation to be a lasting feature of U.S. relations, they are trying to go their own way. A few examples:

We will hold the big supermarket chains to account,» Albanese told reporters, promising to introduce legislation this year. «Price gouging is when supermarkets are taking the piss,» he said.

Tit-for-tat tariffs looming, EU mulls concessions for US
Donald Trump's administration to secure the partial removal of the US tariffs that have already started hitting the bloc's exports and that are set to increase after April 2. European Union officials were told at meetings this week in Washington that there was no way to avoid new auto and so-called reciprocal tariffs that Trump is launching next week, according to people familiar with the talks. Discussions also began on what the contours of a potential deal to reduce them should eventually look like. That has prompted the European Commission, which handles trade matters for the EU, to start working on a «term sheet» for a potential agreement, which would set out areas for negotiations on the punitive trade measures, including lowering its own duties, mutual investments with the US as well as easing certain regulations and standards, said the people. VAT considered fair The reciprocal tariffs are meant to strike out against what Trump considers to be unfair levies on US goods as well as non-tariff barriers, like domestic regulations and how countries collect taxes, including the bloc's value-added tax, digital taxes and regulations. The EU says its VAT is a fair, non-discriminatory tax that applies equally to domestic and imported goods. A spokesperson from the commission declined to comment.

How a standalone ministry of manufacturing and supply chains could do the trick for India
bilateral trade agreements. Accompanying political energy and encouraging words reflect a dramatic departure from sobering scepticism of the recent past. The big change is, of course, Donald Trump's unsheathing of tariffs. Inevitably, trade negotiations with the US are the principal driver. Not every trade agreement will be uniform. Concessions will likely vary, depending on strategic vulnerability. As India's most consequential business, technology and foreign policy relationship, the US will get priority in timing and substance. This is rooted in realism. It's the same approach every other major trade partner of Washington will take. In a volatile world, marked by American recalibration and retrenchment, there are significant gains to becoming among the earliest countries to find accord with the Trump administration. Gains will be both tangible and intangible.

Global stock markets plummeted with automakers like Toyota, Hyundai and Mercedes leading the plunge. In New York, shares in General Motors tumbled with Ford and Stellantis also declining.
