India against EU bringing in new issues at WTO meet via backdoor
India has opposed the European Union's bid to push new issues such as carbon taxes, industrial subsidies, women and climate at the upcoming ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the garb of "deliberative functions" or «conversation with ministers» that seek to reform the body. Officials said the EU wants an open-ended work programme for such issues while developing countries are against them being discussed among ministers as they don't have a negotiating mandate from the global trade body. Deliberation sessions have been planned for the first time at the 13th ministerial conference of the WTO for ministers to discuss various issues.

India to pip China as top member of World Trade Centers association
India is poised to overtake China as the largest member of the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) in the next five years, its chairman said, underscoring a hitherto circumspect New Delhi's rapid global strides that neatly dovetail into a China-plus-one corporate sourcing strategy aimed at derisking supply chains across the planet. «I would say, particularly in the past 10 years, India's presence on the global stage has become increasingly pronounced,» said John E. Drew, Chairman of the WTCA, an international trade platform that connects more than 300 WTCs in nearly 100 countries. «While India's growth trajectory has been ongoing, its recognition and active participation in major economic discussions alongside China, the US, Russia, and the EU signify its emergence as a significant player in the global economy,» he said. Currently, India has about 40 WTC licensees covering more than 30 cities. According to the real estate developer, a large number of Indian entrepreneurs establishing successful companies in the US, particularly in tech hubs like California and Massachusetts, further strengthened India's influence in global business. «I expect this trend to continue, paralleling the trajectory seen with Chinese entrepreneurship,» he said.

India, Asia gains as Houthi attacks and freight costs disrupt diesel imports to Europe
Houthi attacks on merchant shipping continue to disrupt international trade, driving more cargoes to Asia. Flows to the European Union and the UK plunged as higher freight costs stoked by the ongoing turmoil in the Red Sea, as well as unplanned refinery maintenance in Asia, made trade economics better for sending cargoes east rather than west.

India has slipped to the 85th spot on the Henley Passport Index. India had gone up to 80th position in January when the rankings for 2024 were unveiled. The Henley Passport Index is updated monthly. Six countries still jointly hold the top position in the 2024 Henley Passport Index, offering their citizens visa-free access to a record-breaking number of destinations. The most powerful passports in the world now allow citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and Singapore to travel 194 out of 227 destinations worldwide without requiring a visa, according to data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Four EU members have joined them at the top: Germany, Italy, Spain, and France.

Russia: Alexei Navalny's wife makes her first post on social media after husband's mysterious death in prison
A post shared by Юлия Навальная (@yulia_navalnaya) Kira Yarmysh, the spokesperson for the late Russian opposition leader, confirmed Navalny's death and demanded that his body be handed over to his family "immediately." Yarmysh also accused Russian officials of lying to delay the process, CNN reported. Yarmysh's statement comes after the Russian prison service said that Russian President Vladimir Putin's critic, Navalny, died on Friday after he felt 'unwell' during a walk in his prison and fell unconscious. The cause of his death is not clear.

India starts greening up textile industry ahead of carbon tax
New Delhi: The textile industry is moving to shed its polluter tag by adopting a ‘circular economy’ in order to avoid being snared by future climate change tax regimes such as the European Union’s proposed Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), two persons aware of the plans said. CBAM will tax the ‘embedded carbon’ in imports from select emission-intensive sectors—steel, aluminium, cement, hydrogen, electricity and fertilizers. It is expected to be implemented in 2026.

US may allow 'self-certification', India, Africa resist EU diktat
Russian diamonds from the world’s affluent markets, a confused, volatile trade is feeling the pulls and pressures: a rigid rule pushed by Europe to probably regain its waning influence; the emerging voices of Africa and India opposing it; and, a new, different plan mooted last week in America, the largest market, which could make life easier for the trade amid the chaos of geopolitics. Trade sources told ET there was a glimmer of hope following a meeting last week between a US government official and the country’s leading jewellers who import diamonds mined across the world and polished in India and other countries. “It was indicated at the meeting that America could accept `self-certification’ from its jewellers that the diamonds imported into the country have no Russian links. Here, the process could be similar to the one applicable for American firms importing fish and seafood," said a senior industry person.
