Hurricane Helene threatens 'unsurvivable' storm surge and vast inland damage, forecasters say
Hurricane Helene was advancing Thursday across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida, threatening an «unsurvivable» storm surge in northwestern parts of the state as well as damaging winds, rains and flash floods hundreds of miles inland across much of the southeastern U.S., the National Weather Service in Tallahassee said. Helene is expected to be a major hurricane — meaning a Category 3 or higher — when it makes landfall on Florida's northwestern coast Thursday evening. As of early Thursday, hurricane warnings and flash flood warnings extended far beyond the coast up into south-central Georgia. The governors of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas have all declared emergencies in their states. The weather service forecast storm surges of up to 20 feet (6 meters) and warned they could be particularly «catastrophic and life-threatening» in Florida's Apalachee Bay. It added that high winds and heavy rains also posed risks.

Trump's low-tax, high-tariff strategy could clash with economic realities
Donald Trump makes his closing economic argument before the election, he is outlining a vision for a manufacturing renaissance that reprises a familiar pitch: Make goods in America and enjoy low taxes, or face punishing tariffs. Trump's pitch combines the type of carrots-and-sharp-sticks approach that he called «America First» during his first term, when he imposed stiff tariffs on allies and competitors while lowering taxes on American firms. During a speech in Savannah, Georgia, on Tuesday, Trump suggested he would go far beyond that initial approach and adopt what he rebranded a «new American industrialism.»

As US President, Trump plans to offer foreign companies new incentives, with a warning
Donald Trump will pledge to personally recruit foreign companies and outline new incentives — including an offer of federal land — designed to lure operations to the US during an economic address on Tuesday in Savannah, Georgia. The Republican presidential nominee will outline a carrot-and-stick approach, according to a senior Trump adviser who requested anonymity to detail the proposal, luring those who sell into the US with a more favorable business climate while also threatening harsh tariffs on imports. The speech is the latest effort by Trump to cast himself as the best steward of the economy, seeking to seize on a top issue for voters with less than 50 days before the election. Trump’s Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, is expected to outline her own economic vision during a campaign appearance in Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

US judge dismisses three counts in Trump election case in Georgia
Georgia judge on Thursday dismissed three of the counts in the indictment accusing former US president Donald Trump and co-defendants of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the southern state. Two of the three charges thrown out by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee involved Trump, and he now faces a total of eight felony counts in Georgia. McAfee declined, however, to quash the entire indictment, which accuses the Republican presidential candidate and his allies of racketeering and other offenses.

U.S Elections: Harris has slight edge but this state is key for victory, says Goldman Sachs
Harris and former President Donald Trump are in a very close race. The fact that both candidates frequently move up in the polls indicates how close the contest is. When President Joe Biden was still in the campaign, Trump first seemed to be in the lead. But Biden's withdrawal in mid-July altered the situation. After stepping up, Harris caught up to Trump and eventually overtook him in August, as per the reports of Yahoo finance.

Donald Trump leads over Kamala Harris in these two critical swing states just before U.S. presidential debate
Donald Trump is narrowly ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris. The survey, which was carried out between September 5 and 6, by Mainstreet Research USA and the Florida Atlantic University Political Communication and Public Opinion Research Lab, revealed that Trump, the Republican nominee, was leading Harris, the Democratic nominee, in Georgia by 2 points and North Carolina by 1 point. Both polls are based on the responses of at least 647 registered U.S. voters who live in the respective states. The margin of error for the Georgia poll is 3.9 percent, and the margin of error for the North Carolina poll is 3.7 percent. Patriot Polling's survey indicates a dead heat between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in seven swing states, with Trump expected to win Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. In a race with multiple candidates, RealClear Polling finds that Harris leads by an average of 1.9 percent (47 to 45.1%) in national polls. Based on survey responses, that average also includes third-party candidates on the ballot, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who withdrew from the 2024 contest and endorsed Trump.
