Construction of dams have turned Sutlej into rivulet: SC judge
Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Karol has said the construction of dams on the Sutlej has turned the trans-Himalayan river into a rivulet, altering the entire ecosystem and eco chain. Speaking at the launch of a book titled «Climate Change: The Policy, Law and Practice» by lawyer Jatinder (Jay) Cheema on Friday, Justice Karol also highlighted that climate change is heavily impacting the agriculture sector in the country. The Supreme Court judge noted that stretches of certain rivers are drying up due to rising temperatures and human activity. «The only trans-Himalayan river in India, the Sutlej, has turned into a rivulet because of the construction of several dams, changing the entire ecosystem and eco chain,» he said.

Mint Quick Edit | Are no-brokerage stock platforms in trouble?
A fresh circular from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) seems to have sent discount brokers into a tizzy. Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath said the company may have to reconsider its zero-brokerage model, or even increase brokerage fees for trades in the futures and options (F&O) segment, after Sebi’s directive that all market infrastructure institutions, including stock exchanges, must charge members a uniform fee unlinked to trading volumes.

Budget 2024: EEPC India pushes for export boost, calls for higher interest subvention
EEPC India has suggested restoring the interest subvention to 3% for the specified 410 tariff lines besides raising the subvention rate to 5% for MSME manufacturers exporting under any tariff line. «Considering the rise in the repo rate from 4.4% to 6.5%, we have requested to restore the interest subvention rate to 3% for the specified 410 tariff lines. We also requested that for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) manufacturers exporting under any tariff line, the interest subvention rate be increased to 5%. Merchant exporters have low-profit margins, and the cost of credit affects their viability significantly. Therefore, we have requested to extend the Interest Equalisation Scheme to merchant exporters with a 3% subvention rate,» EEPC India chairman Arun Kumar Garodia said. According to Trade Notice No 07/ 2024-25, the Interest Equalization Scheme has been extended for two months but only for MSMEs. It also says that the claims from non-MSME exporters will not be accepted beyond 30th June 2024.

Congress hits back at PM Modi, says people told his govt in polls 'tumse na ho payega'
Lok Sabha, saying that he mentioned "tumse na ho payega" in his speech when 140 crore Indians had told his government the same thing in the just-concluded general election. Prime Minister Modi mounted a stinging counterattack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi as he mocked him as «balak buddhi» (childish mind), accusing him of linking Hindus with violence and making false claims in Lok Sabha. Modi also sought stringent action against Gandhi to protect parliamentary democracy. Replying to nearly 18-hour long discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address in the Lower House, Modi said the Congress and its «ecosystem» are working day and night to impress upon people that the BJP-led NDA has been defeated in the elections despite voters handing his government a historic third-term for stability and continuity. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge slammed Modi for calling the party «parasite» and claimed that the prime minister had used the term for farmers as well in 2021.

But, at the same time, the state-run players are learning the tricks of the trade — and have a very limited value at risk. For PSU banks, non-performing assets (NPAs) of credit cards outstanding are the highest among all retail sub-sectors — at 11.3% — as of March 2024. The comparative figure is about 2% for private sector and foreign banks, Reserve Bank of India data showed.
