Extreme Election students Justice show country politician TMC MP Saket Gokhale demands Bharat Ratna for TN Seshan
Chief Election Commissioner TN Seshan, saying he upheld the independence and dignity of the Election Commission. Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha through a Zero Hour mention, the TMC leader said Seshan was the 10th chief election commissioner and he redefined the way the Election Commission of India (ECI) functioned. «Seshan was a fiercely independent election commissioner. His famous quote 'I eat politicians for breakfast' showed that he worked without fear or favour and upheld the independence and dignity of the Election Commission,» he said. Giving reasons for his demand for Bharat Ratna for Seshan, Gokhale said that his strong image gave independence to the ECI. «Today the election commissioners are appointed directly by the government with a majority vote of Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi and Home Minister (Amit) Shah on the selection panel. Neither the Chief Justice of India, which is the judiciary, nor the Leader of the Opposition, which is the legislature, have any say in the appointments,» he said. The TMC leader said «the ECI has now become a government-appointed body».

COST Provident Align country reports recommendations Elon Musk's Starlink may face spectrum tax in India, raising service costs
Starlink is likely to be subjected to a spectrum usage charge (SUC) in India, a levy that had been scrapped for terrestrial network providers such as Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea a few years ago, ToI reported citing sources. If imposed, the tax will increase costs for the Elon Musk-led satellite communications company in India. The potential charge adds to the challenges Starlink is already facing as it negotiates strict compliance mandates related to internet suspension and interception. Sources told ToI, Starlink, which is set to receive telecom airwaves through administrative allocation under the new telecom law passed in December 2023, may have to pay around 3% SUC on its adjusted gross revenue from the country.

UPS FIVE Micron Trade stars India imposes provisional anti-dumping duty on import of Chinese aluminium foil
anti-dumping duty from $619 to $873 per metric tonne (MT) on aluminium foil imports from China. A gazette notification dated March 17 said the duty will be applicable on aluminium foil up to 80 micron, excluding aluminium foil below 5.5 micron for non-capacitor application. These developments come in the backdrop of United States (US) levying reciprocal tariffs. In addition to these, the US implemented a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports last week. Domestic steel and aluminium producers fear that more Chinese products will make their way to India, putting pressure on margins. India’s provisional anti-dumping duty imposed under this notification shall be effective for six months and shall be payable in Indian currency, the notification said. This duty follows preliminary findings of Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) which concluded that the domestic industry has suffered material injury on account of the goods being exported to India from China. The order lists multiple China headquartered companies that were exporting to India at a price below the normal value, resulting in dumping. Those mentioned include Henan Mingtai technology development Co. Ltd., Henan Mingsheng New Material Technology Co. Ltd., Sunho New Materials Technology Co. Ltd., Shanghai Sunho Aluminium Foil Co. Ltd., Jiangsu Dingsheng New Materials Joint-Stock Co. Ltd., Inner Mongolia Lian Shen New Energy Co. Ltd., and Hangzhou Five Star Aluminium Co. Ltd.

FIVE Reuters CEO Airlines Strategy Boeing travelers Air India CEO warns aircraft shortage to last at least four years
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson on Tuesday said the global aircraft shortage hampering airline growth will persist for four to five years as supply snags hobble production at jetmakers Boeing and Airbus. Speaking at an event organised by travel news website Skift, Wilson said he sees pinch points in the supply of narrowbody jet engines, business and first class seats, and some elements of aircraft fuselages. Air India is in the midst of an ambitious turnaround strategy two years after Tata Group took control of the airline, but its restructuring efforts have been complicated by jet delivery delays.
