NRI status and tax: Job search abroad part of non-resident stay, rules Mumbai ITAT
ITAT) in Mumbai has ruled in favour of an individual who claimed non-resident status for tax purposes as he had spent 210 days abroad for work and job search, according to a TOI report by Lubna Kably. The tribunal clarified that an individual’s tax residency status must be decided only based on the number of days spent in India. M Gulati, the taxpayer, did not disclose his overseas income of Rs 1.2 crore for the financial year 2015-16, asserting that he was a non-resident because he stayed in India for less than 182 days. The Income-tax department, however, contended that of the 210 days spent outside India, 28 days were used to search for employment and thus should not be counted. Based on this, the department treated him as a tax resident, making his global income taxable in India. The ITAT rejected this argument and held that days spent abroad for seeking employment must be considered as valid for determining non-resident status. The tribunal referred to Explanation 1 to section 6(1) of the Income-tax Act, which provides that if a person leaves India for employment purposes, they will be considered a tax resident only if they stay in India for 182 days or more in that year.

India one of four nations to demonstrate satellite docking and undocking: ISRO Chairman
«India is now one of the four countries in the world to have demonstrated both docking and undocking technology,» Narayanan told reporters. Recalling the preparations the organisation did before the mission, Narayanan mentioned that they carried out over 120 computer simulations of the mission to make sure there wouldn't be any mistakes during the mission. «On January 16, we had a major achievement; we successfully docked both the satellites together, and it was rotating as a single body. Then, we wanted to separate it out, the undocking process, for that we carried out a lot of studies and analysis and we made a simulator and carried out 120 simulations, as there should not be any mistakes. On 13th March, at 9:20 am, in the first attempt itself, we succeeded in the undocking process,» the ISRO chairman said. On January 16, ISRO scientists successfully demonstrated their space docking ability by docking two satellites launched under SpaDex.

'Why oppose Hindi but profit from dubbing movies in it?': Pawan Kalyan slams Tamil Nadu leaders over NEP row
Pawan Kalyan on Friday criticized Tamil Nadu politicians for what he called «hypocrisy» regarding the alleged imposition of Hindi in the state. He pointed out that while these leaders oppose Hindi, they allow Tamil movies to be dubbed in the language for financial gain. «I do not understand why some criticize Sanskrit. Why do Tamil Nadu politicians oppose Hindi while allowing their movies to be dubbed in Hindi for financial gain? They want money from Bollywood but refuse to accept Hindi--what kind of logic is that?» Kalyan asked while addressing the party's 12th foundation day at Pithampuram in Kakinada. Kalyan's comments come amid Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin accusing the Union government of 'Hindi imposition' and refusing to implement the three-language formula laid out in the NEP as a protest. Emphasizing India's linguistic diversity, Kalyan said that the country needs multiple languages, including Tamil, rather than just two dominant ones. «India needs multiple languages, including Tamil, not just two. We must embrace linguistic diversity — not only to maintain the integrity of our nation but also to foster love and unity among its people,» Kalyan said.

comeback programmes — designed to help professionals, primarily women, re-enter the workforce after a career break — are paying off for companies, but there's still a long way to go, say experts. Companies that have adopted returnship programmes are seeing the benefits: access to a bigger pool of talent, improved diversity and low attrition rates among the returnees. Alumni of these programmes often become the organisation's strongest advocates, frequently referring friends, former colleagues and other professionals. «Returnships are likely to become a standard part of talent acquisition strategies as companies realise their strategic value in addressing skill shortages and promoting diversity,» said Shilpa Khanna, people advisory leader, India, at professional services firm Aon. «The vision is for all talent that is interested to work have a fair and objective chance of returning to the workforce, get relevant support to be successful and not be discriminated against for stepping away from their careers,» Khanna said.

India, China outperform global trade in 2024, trade resilience stressed in 2025: UNCTAD
global trade averages in 2024, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said in its Global Trade Update Friday. It said that trends like the widening deficits of the US and EU with China along with India’s rising deficit with Russia amid shifting energy trade could prompt new tariffs, restrictions, or investment shifts, adding to economic uncertainty. However, it cautioned that trade resilience is under pressure in 2025 and as trade uncertainty grows, global cooperation and balanced policies will be key to preventing economic fragmentation and safeguarding long-term growth. Noting that protectionism and shifting trade strategies could disrupt global trade and services trade remains strong but goods trade faces uncertainty, UNCTAD urged balanced policies and multilateral cooperation. Governments are expanding tariffs, subsidies, and industrial policies, reshaping trade flows.
