Etihad is pleased with its performance in India, aiming to double capacity: CEO Antonoaldo Neves
Etihad Airways Group CEO Antonoaldo Neves has the precarious job of balancing growth with profitability and margins as the Abu Dhabi-based airline seeks to save $150 million in costs a year while doubling its size. In a conversation with ET’s Forum Gandhi and Anirban Chowdhury, Neves talks about Etihad’s plans for India, which is among its top three markets globally. Edited excerpts: You joined Etihad in 2022 as it narrowed losses and made management changes. With a half-year profit and shifting in its strategy, what were your main focus areas? What milestones did you achieve? We see Etihad’s journey in three phases. The first 15 years focused on creating a global brand and expanding. Then, for five years, the airline was restructured and downsized to 60 planes. Now, we are ramping up again… We have 92 aircraft in our fleet. In 2022, we broke even. Now, in phase three, we’re planning the airline’s future and restructuring the network to be more profitable, shifting from ultra-long haul to mid-haul and prioritising point-to-point operations from Abu Dhabi. We also aim to double our capacity in India, utilising the available seats in bilateral agreements, and we’re pleased with our performance here. You’re one of the few premium airline CEOs discussing costs. You have previously mentioned a target of $100-150 million in annual cost cuts. How do you balance growth with these cost reductions?

Speculative and misleading: MEA on media report saying ammunition from India entering Ukraine
India on Thursday described as «inaccurate» a media report that said artillery shells sold by Indian arms manufacturers have been diverted by European customers to Ukraine and New Delhi has not intervened to stop it. «We have seen the Reuters report. It is speculative and misleading. It implies violations by India, where none exist and hence, is inaccurate and mischievous,» Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. He said India has an «impeccable» track record of compliance with international obligations on the export of military and dual-use items. «India has been carrying out its defence exports taking into account its international obligations on non-proliferation and based on its own robust legal and regulatory framework, which includes a holistic assessment of relevant criteria, including end-user obligations and certifications,» Jaiswal said.

Look out for the goldilocks moment
US Federal Reserve's half-a-point interest rate cut on Wednesday — the first cut in four years — in their stride on expectations that 'Fedhead' Jerome Powell is front-loading the downcycle. This is the less scary scenario over the US tipping into a recession, and investors seem quite comfortable with it. But the rate action may not have played through yet.

NC, Congress allowed India's waters to flow across the border; had no nerve to construct dams: Modi
Modi slammed the Congress and the National Conference (NC) on Thursday for «allowing» India's waters to flow across the border for seven decades and showing no nerve to construct dams for the utilisation of the resource that would have benefitted Jammu and Kashmir's farmers. Addressing an election rally in support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in this newly-created Assembly segment of Mata Vaishno Devi, Modi said his government is continuously improving road connectivity in the region to tap the full tourism potential of the area. «The governments run by the NC and Congress allowed our waters to flow across the border. They never dared to construct a big dam here. The Shahpur Kandi dam project remained untouched for years and as a result, thousands of hectares of land in Jammu became lifeless,» he said. He said if a BJP government was not formed at the Centre, the distressed farmers of Kathua and Samba districts would not have got a new lease of life with the Shahpur Kandi dam.

Changed oil market may help India extract better deals from suppliers
oil market has changed in a year and will influence the way India negotiates its annual crude purchase deals for next year as the country is witnessing fuel consumption growth while global demand is forecast to be weakening, a petroleum ministry official said. “When we sit down with them (suppliers) in December or January, for both sides the negotiating positions would be very different from what they were last year,” said the official, who didn't want to be named. “The market of December 2024 is not the market of December 2023.” “What has changed in the market is that whether it’s IEA or OPEC, they are bringing down their estimates for world demand,” he said, adding that India was in a different position as it is experiencing a demand increase.
