Indian festivals and the life cycles of old clothes
Indian festivals involve new clothes. Onam, which is today, will see Malayalis receiving new mundus and saris. What isn’t often appreciated is that new clothes mean more old ones, which in time will stop being worn entirely — and then possibly cut up and reused at home. This may seem weird in these days of fast fashion, where nearly new clothes are jettisoned (hopefully ending up in ‘pre loved’ sales rather than the garbage dump). But old clothes were ideally suited for many kitchen tasks. Most obviously as dusters, but for culinary uses too like making paneer or hung curd, which needed fine thin cloth to drain away the whey. This is so integral to cheese-making that cheesecloth is manufactured for this purpose. The Oxford Companion to Cheese notes that it is made “in a variety of thread counts, ranging from coarser weaves in the range of 60 threads per inch… to finer fabrics at 90 threads per inch”. Coarse cloth is used for harder cheeses, drained of more moisture, while finer fabrics retain more, for softer, creamier cheese.

Concerted effort in last 10 years to erode democratic structures, bulldoze institutions: Mallikarjun Kharge
India's democracy, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said 140 crore Indians gave a verdict which believed in our long-standing institutions, painstakingly built by the makers of our nation. He also alleged that in the past 10 years, there has been a concerted effort to erode democratic structures, bulldoze institutions and hurt the integrity of our systems. Kharge quoted India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru as saying, «Democracy is the best form of government. It allows people to have a say in how they are governed and to hold their leaders accountable.» «The year 2024 is a watershed year for India's Democracy. 140 crore Indians gave a verdict which believed in our long-standing institutions, painstakingly built by the makers of our nation,» Kharge said in a reference to the 2024 Lok Sabha poll results.

Replacing rice with other crops could help recover groundwater lost since 2000: Study
rice with other crops could help recover 60-100 cubic kilometres of groundwater lost since 2000 in north India, a study has found. Current cropping patterns — dominated by rice, which relies heavily on groundwater for irrigation — could result in a loss of about 13-43 cubic kilometres of groundwater if warming of the planet continues, a team of researchers, including those from the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Gujarat, said. The researchers proposed shifting from existing cropping habits by cutting down on cultivating rice as a potential solution for sustaining the fast-depleting resource in a warmer world that threatens food and water security. «Replacing 37 per cent area of rice with other crops can recover 61 to 108 cubic kilometres groundwater compared to 13 to 43 cubic kilometres with current cropping pattern under the 1.5-3 degrees Celsius global warming levels,» the authors wrote in the study accepted for publication in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Nexus.

VP Jagdeep Dhankhar targets Rahul Gandhi over quota remark, says it shows 'anti-constitutional mindset'
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on «ending reservation», Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday said such comments by a person holding a constitutional post shows «anti-constitutional mindset». Addressing a public event in Mumbai, Dhankhar also said that awareness about India's Constitution is highly needed as some people have forgotten its soul. «A person from a constitutional post saying on a foreign land that reservation should be ended underscores the same anti-constitutional mindset. The baton of prejudices against reservation has been handed over. It is the same old anti-constitutional mindset,» he said. «Reservation is not against meritocracy, but it is the soul of the country and the Constitution. It is an affirmative action and not negative. It is not depriving someone of opportunity but handholding those who are pillars of strength of the society,» the vice president said.

Rising freight costs, container shortages threaten exports; need urgent steps: GTRI
freight costs, shortage of containers and dependence on major shipping hubs and foreign carriers pose serious challenges to the country's exports, think tank GTRI said on Sunday. To address these challenges, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) recommended that India implement several strategies to boost domestic container production, enhance the role of local shipping companies, promote use of domestic containers, and strengthen local shipping firms. «India can lower its risk of global supply chain disruptions by boosting domestic container production, encouraging the use of locally made containers, and increasing the use of Indian shipping companies for transporting goods,» GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said. Between 2022 and 2024, shipping rates for a 40-foot container have fluctuated significantly.

RBI plans to revamp currency management infrastructure to cater to future cash needs
currency management infrastructure over the next 4-5 years, mainly to ensure adequate storage and handling capacity to cater to the future cash needs of the growing economy. The creation of greenfield currency management centres, the introduction of warehouse automation, the installation of security and surveillance systems, an inventory management system, and a centralised command centre are being mooted to modernise the existing infrastructure, according to an RBI document. The expected timeline for the whole project is 4-5 years, according to the expression of interest (EoI) issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for procurement of consultancy and project management services for the modernisation of currency management infrastructure. «Despite moderation in the growth rate of NIC (Notes In Circulation) in the last three years, analysis indicates that the growth will continue to be positive over the foreseeable future though the pace thereof is expected to be slower over the next decade,» the document said.

Psychological safety: Role of leaders in ensuring a psychologically safe workplace
Especially when it comes to raising questions regarding a leader’s strategy, they feel it’s better to keep the thoughts to themselves as they do not want to come across as someone overriding the leader’s authority. And this is exactly what happens when employees do not feel psychologically safe at work. The concept of psychological safety has been gaining traction in recent years as more and more leaders can be seen realising its benefits. When an employee feels safe enough to speak their mind and not hold back, they significantly contribute to driving innovation at work.
