Centre removes minimum export condition on onions; effective immediately
minimum export condition on onion exports with immediate effect, as per a notification issued on Friday. In May 2024, the Modi-led government had lifted the ban on onion exports but imposed minimum export price at (MEP) $550 per MT. India's onion exports in June are estimated to have plunged by more than 50 percent as the minimum export price of $550 per tonne and an export duty of 40 percent combined to make Indian onions more expensive than the competition, exporters told ET in August.

Chef Vikas Khanna’s viral reply to BBC: ‘My sense of hunger came from New York, not Amritsar’— Watch the Video
Chef Vikas Khanna organized large-scale food distribution drives, winning appreciation from many. In an interview with the BBC in 2020, he was asked by an anchor if his sense of hunger comes from India. Khanna responded, “My sense of hunger came from New York.” He explained further but did not elaborate in this particular interaction. The interviewer begins by highlighting Chef Vikas Khanna's achievements, including cooking for the Obamas and co-hosting with Gordon Ramsay. He then contrasts this success with Khanna's humble beginnings, noting his origins in Amritsar, Punjab. The interviewer suggests that Khanna's background from a less affluent family might give him a particular insight into the challenges of living in India. This implies that Khanna's experiences in a small Indian city have provided him with a deep understanding of hunger and poverty, based on the stereotype that everyone in less wealthy parts of India is automatically impoverished and starving.

Trump or Harris: The next US president can't afford to drive off international students
international students and the U.S. economy—especially for students from India, who have long faced uncertainty about their post-graduation status in the United States. This proposal should be viewed not just as a policy shift but as a strategic move to retain top global talent. The U.S. has long benefitted from the influx of international students, particularly from India, who excel in high-demand sectors such as technology, finance, and engineering. However, the current visa process is fraught with uncertainty, leaving many graduates in limbo. Trump’s plan could potentially change that narrative, offering a pathway to stability for thousands of students who have invested heavily in their American education. Vice President Kamala Harris, a staunch advocate for international students, has also worked tirelessly to streamline the visa process and support pathways to citizenship. Her initiatives, rooted in her personal understanding as a child of immigrants, aim to create a more inclusive environment where international students can contribute to the American economy and society without the fear of being forced to leave. Harris’s advocacy, coupled with Trump’s proposal, could mark a turning point in how the U.S. approaches immigration and talent retention.

Indian Hotels always delivers a bit more than promised; that's the story of last 5-6 years: Puneet Chhatwal
Puneet Chhatwal, MD & CEO, IHCL, says their approach has been pretty balanced. They haven't gone all in on heavy assets or kept things super light, and haven't just zeroed in on one brand. Since they kicked off the journey in 2017-2018 with Aspiration 2022 and then pivoted post-COVID with Ahvaan 2025, they have aimed to diversify their business across both new and traditional areas. The new ventures are mostly fueled by digital, while the traditional ones have benefited from operational efficiency, especially after COVID, when demand started to outpace supply. Also, their growth isn't just about direct comparisons. Over the past six years, IHCL has more than doubled its portfolio size, and are launching more than one hotel every month. Rs 1 lakh crore market capitalization for Indian Hotels? Do you count the zeros? Puneet Chhatwal: Actually, I do not know how to count them. But yes, indeed a very proud moment for the sector, not just for the group. I think this sector was not known for value creation as much as it was for the glory part of it. And I think finding that sweet spot and the right balance has been very well driven in the entire sector globally, post-COVID.

Bimaru to boom state: UP will now have a chip on its shoulder
Uttar Pradesh, once called a bimaru (sick) state with low industrialisation, is on its way to become a boom state. As it strives to become an electronics hub, the state will now get a semiconductor plant too. The joint venture between Taiwan’s Foxconn and IT services major HCL Group has been allotted around thirty acres of land, near the upcoming Jewar airport in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida, to set up a semiconductor outsourced assembly and testing (OSAT) unit, said Et has reported based on information from sources. Uttar Pradesh has received proposals for projects totalling around Rs 40,038 crore under its new policy to incentivise semiconductor manufacturing and attract global investments in the state, the government said in a statement in July. Among several proposals, it has so far considered Hiranandani group’s Tarq Semiconductor plant. In fact, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the only north Indian state actively vying for high-tech industrial projects which has traditionally been the mainstay of south Indian states. Uttar Pradesh has followed states Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat to have a dedicated semiconductor policy.

Infrastructure lending faces growing risks: RBI's Rajeshwar Rao
M Rajeshwar Rao, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has stated that infrastructure projects pose significant risks, complicating their financing. He advocated for a unified approach to infrastructure development, viewing projects as interconnected rather than independent. This announcement coincides with RBI's proposal for new rules requiring banks to set aside an additional 5% provision of the loan amount, up from the current requirement of 0.4%. If implemented, this would increase the cost of project financing. Rao made these comments at an infrastructure seminar organized by the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID). «High sunk costs, coupled with long gestation periods, further complicate the financing of infrastructure projects and lead to asset-liability mismatches. Delays in approvals, clearances, land acquisition challenges, and breaches of agreements also add to the risks of project financing and cause further issues like cost overruns,» Rao said. He emphasized that infrastructure projects are interdependent, so issues in one project can impact others, making coordinated planning and execution crucial.
