US Marines died Sunday after an Osprey aircraft crashed on a remote tropical island north of Australia during war games, US military officials said. Five Marines had been rescued from the crash site and flown to a hospital in Darwin in a «serious condition», the US officials said, while Australian police said they were triaging the rest of the injured crew at the scene. «There were a total of 23 personnel on board,» US military officials said in a statement. «Three have been confirmed deceased while five others were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition.» Rescue efforts were complicated by the location of the crash — the remote and sparsely populated Melville Island about 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of the Australian mainland. «Recovery efforts are ongoing,» US officials said, adding that an investigation into the cause of the incident had been launched. Meta is shutting down the Messenger Lite app, the lightweight stripped-down version of Messenger, on Android.Currently, users of the app are receiving a message that advises them to «use Messenger to keep chatting», reports TechCrunch. The app has already been removed from the Google Play Store for new users and will no longer be available after September 18 for existing users. «Starting August 21, people using the Messenger Lite app for Android will be directed to Messenger or FB Lite to send and receive messages on Messenger,» a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch in an email. In 2016, Meta (then known as Facebook) had introduced Messenger Lite for Android for users with less-powerful Android devices, offering only the essential features of the instant messaging app to consume less storage space and processing power. Even thoughMeta released Messenger Lite for iOS, the company had discontinued it in 2020. According to mobile analytics firmdata.ai, the Lite versions of the app had combined downloads of around 760 million globally, with India holding the single largest portion, followed by Brazil and Indonesia. Meta recently announced that Messenger will drop SMS support next month. It had notified users that they «will no longer be able to use Messenger to send and receive SMS messages sent by your cellular network when you update your app after September 28, 2023». TikTok is reportedly planning to ban links to outside e-commerce websites such as Amazon, as it ramps up its shopping platform in the US. The move is seen as a way for the company to force people to use TikTok Shop if they want to purchase an item that they see on the app, reports 'The Information'. According to the report, TikTok Shop is on track to lose more than $500 million in the US this year. «TikTok Shop, the app's nascent shopping service, is expected to lose more than $500 million in the US this year,» said the report, citing sources. The loss reflects TikTok's heavy investment in hiring, building a delivery network and «subsidising merchants that offer double-digit-percentage discounts and free shipping,» the report added. Consumers in the US are spending around $3-$4 million a day on TikTok Shop. The company expects this figure to exceed $10 million by the end of the year. TikTok, the short video platform owned by ByteDance, launched online shopping service TikTok Shop in 2021, starting in Indonesia.

NEW DELHI : India will supply 14,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice this year to Mauritius and 79,000 tonnes to Bhutan under humanitarian operations, making an exception for two key diplomatic partners. The decision has been taken after India received requests from both the nations to exempt the export prohibition on non-basmati rice, two government officials aware of the matter said.
