A fissured land: Israel, Palestine and Hamas
What is the genesis of this crisis? It’s an incendiary mix of politics, religion and economics. Modern Palestine was populated with Jews from the global diaspora—a British imperial drive—in 1948. Around 750,000 Palestinians were expelled as Jews captured 78% of the land.

What the Israel-Hamas war portends for India’s defence sector
₹15,920 crore, up by 24% versus the previous year. To be sure, countries such as the US, Russia, and France would capitalize on this sort of an opportunity the most and are likely to increase their share of defence exports compared to India, said Amit Anwani, an analyst at Prabhudas Lilladher. This is because India still accounts for a negligible portion of the world’s defence exports.

'The blood you shed': Israel buries fallen soldiers
military cemetery of Jerusalem, mourners streamed in for the funerals of young Israeli soldiers, with only the stifled cries of anguish piercing the steely silence. Mount Herzl cemetery, named after the founder of political Zionism, has in the past few years seen more remembrance ceremonies than funerals. But mounds of ochre earth now mark freshly dug graves as Israel buries its soldiers fallen in the battle against Hamas militants whose shock assault unleashed Saturday has claimed 1,200 lives in the country. Most of the victims are civilians, but at least 169 Israeli troops have been killed in the battles to repel Hamas fighters. Eleven of them were laid to rest at the cemetery in the night to Wednesday. A few steps from the tomb of former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, the brothers in arms of 20-year-old Noam Elimelekh Rottenberg lowered the coffin draped with Israel's blue-and-white flag into the grave. «Noam, this war will be the last.

Hamas attack: Iran’s expanding footprints across Arab world
Iran on Tuesday claimed that it played no role in the attack launched by Hamas last Saturday that took Israelis by surprise but there is no denying the fact that Tehran over the years has increased its support and appeal across the Arab world that is dominated by people who profess Sunni sect of Islam. The world's biggest non-Sunni country has become a key factor in the West Asian fault lines creating its proxy groups in Lebanon and Yemen and backing Hamas to take on Israel over the last few decades. It is no secret that Tehran has exploited sentiments and presence of the Shia population in some Gulf states. While the USA and Israel have not yet directly blamed Iran for the October 7 carnage, Tehran came out openly in support of Hamas for carrying out the attacks against Israel.

Israel PM announces wartime 'emergency government' with Gantz
Benjamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday an «emergency government» with an opposition party leader, Benny Gantz, for the duration of the war with Gaza militants. «Following a meeting… held today, the two agreed on establishing an emergency government and war cabinet,» said a joint statement by the premier and Gantz, a former defence minister and army chief. The three-member «war cabinet» would include Netanyahu, Gantz and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. Gadi Eisenkot, also a former army chief from Gantz's party, and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will serve as observers, according to the statement. Opposition leader Yair Lapid has not joined his former ally Gantz, but the statement said a seat would be «reserved» for him in the war cabinet. Netanyahu's extreme-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish allies would remain in government. The premier has agreed to freeze the hardline government's divisive judicial overhaul, which had triggered mass street protests — the biggest in the country's history. «During the war, no bills or government-sponsored motions that are unrelated to the war would be advanced,» the statement said. Gantz last served in a Netanyahu administration in 2020-2021 under a rotation agreement that was meant to see him take the helm for the second half of the government's tenure, but early elections had been called before he was to become prime minister.
