The planet can’t afford another China: NITI Aayog’s Suman Bery
NEW DELHI : India must follow mindful and environmentally conscious consumption and production rather than the single-minded pursuit of growth at any cost, federal policy think tank NITI Aayog vice chairman Suman K. Bery said in an interview. Bery proposed that emerging economic realities, including the potential of services exports, India’s prospects of becoming an agriculture superpower, and the dwindling potential of the manufacturing sector to create jobs due to increased productivity, warrant a review of the traditional notions on which development models are built.

‘Firms seek India, but watchful’
Companies considering India as an investment destination are concerned over long-term outlook of the India-China relationship, besides factors such as competitiveness, the Centre-state polity, societal conflicts, short-term infrastructure and skill availability, said Nick Allan, chief executive of risk consultancy firm Control Risk. This is particularly relevant, considering several American, European, and Japanese companies are exploring India as a key part of their China-plus-one strategy. “In the long term, you know, people question, where’s India and China’s relationship heading? There’s no question that India is emerging as a competitor in a number of spheres to China.

Intriguing lights on Venus revealed: Meteors, not lightning
Venus experiences thunderstorms akin to Earth, proposing a new, eye-opening theory: the mesmerizing flashes of light on Venus are not lightning but meteors disintegrating as they hurtle through the planet's atmosphere. This groundbreaking revelation comes courtesy of a study published in the 'Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.' Researchers hailing from Arizona State University undertook this mission to decipher the true nature of Venus's radiant phenomena. Their investigation involved a meticulous analysis of the luminous occurrences, observed both at the Steward Observatory and Japan's Akatsuki orbiter. The study presents a puzzling conundrum, describing Venus's lightning as «either ubiquitous, rare, or non-existent, depending on how one interprets diverse observations.» The enigma deepens with the findings presented in the Plain Language Summary, available in the online library of Advancing Earth and Space Sciences.

World adapts to Fed’s rate order in 36-hour sequence
Starting with the Federal Reserve on Wednesday and ending with the Bank of Japan two days later, monetary policy will be determined at key meetings across half of the Group of 20. Advanced-economy central banks, accounting for six of the 10 most-traded currencies, may draw particular focus as global policymakers adapt to the theme US officials set out at Jackson Hole in August: that rates are likely to stay higher for longer. All evidence suggests inflation isn’t fully tamed across much of the world, and the ongoing rise in crude oil prices is stoking worries of yet more pressure. So no-one will dare to declare that their job is done, even amid the prospect that central banks in countries from the UK to Switzerland on Thursday could open the door to a pause, as happened last week in the euro zone. Setting the tone for all of them will be new projections from the Paris-based OECD on Tuesday. With weak demand from China depressing global trade, and the outlines of a stagflationary scenario forming in Europe, the apparent resilience of the US economy could prove the only bright spot. That backdrop may prompt the Fed itself to keep rates on hold, but maybe pencil in another increase for later this year. What Bloomberg Economics Says: “We think the FOMC will strike a balanced tone at its Sept.
