Japan tries to reclaim its clout as a global tech leader
industrial policy to expand its economy and finance green manufacturing has helped kick off a fevered scrimmage among nations to develop and protect their own hometown businesses. It has been 40 years since such competitive anxieties about a rising Asian power prompted this kind of embrace of government intervention among the biggest free-market economies. Only then it was Japan, not China, that was the source of unease.

Bimaru to boom state: UP will now have a chip on its shoulder
Uttar Pradesh, once called a bimaru (sick) state with low industrialisation, is on its way to become a boom state. As it strives to become an electronics hub, the state will now get a semiconductor plant too. The joint venture between Taiwan’s Foxconn and IT services major HCL Group has been allotted around thirty acres of land, near the upcoming Jewar airport in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida, to set up a semiconductor outsourced assembly and testing (OSAT) unit, said Et has reported based on information from sources. Uttar Pradesh has received proposals for projects totalling around Rs 40,038 crore under its new policy to incentivise semiconductor manufacturing and attract global investments in the state, the government said in a statement in July. Among several proposals, it has so far considered Hiranandani group’s Tarq Semiconductor plant. In fact, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the only north Indian state actively vying for high-tech industrial projects which has traditionally been the mainstay of south Indian states. Uttar Pradesh has followed states Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat to have a dedicated semiconductor policy.

Bidders' insistence on 51% stake in Yes Bank may jeopardise stake buy: Source
Yes Bank may end up jeopardising the stake buy, an informed source said on Thursday. When asked on whether the deal will go through by the end of this fiscal, the source, who is not authorised to speak to the media, said the deal itself is in a quandary. As per the source, the talks on any deal «are not going anywhere» because of all the bidders' push on the 51 per cent stake. The source explained that the RBI is uncomfortable with a foreign entity owning a 51 per cent stake in a big entity like Yes Bank.

Kaynes to keep away from fabs for now, focus on chip facility, says CEO
Mint. “The plant is costing us ₹4,000 crore ($475 million) to set up, and this itself will take 18 to 24 months to complete fully and make it operational. Right now, we don’t have any plans to venture into a fab project, at least in the near term. We’ll start with chip manufacturing through OSATs, and then slowly see how we can scale up," he said on the inaugural day of Semicon India 2024.

US supports two permanent UN Security Council seats for Africa
United Nations Security Council seats for African states and one seat to be rotated among small island developing states, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield will announce on Thursday. The move comes as the U.S. seeks to repair ties with Africa, where many are unhappy about Washington's support for Israel's war in Gaza, and deepen relations with Pacific Islands nations important to countering Chinese influence in the region. Thomas-Greenfield told Reuters she hopes the announcement will «move this agenda forward in a way that we can achieve Security Council reform at some point in the future,» describing it as part of U.S. President Joe Biden's legacy.
