Blinken seeks Arab pressure on Hamas as Israel readies Gaza move
Blinken on Friday began a tour of Arab capitals as he seeks to build pressure on Hamas while Israel readies a likely massive offensive on the Gaza Strip following the militants' attacks. The top US diplomat will meet Jordan's King Abdullah II, a longtime US partner, and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in Amman and will then visit Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Blinken spent Thursday in Tel Aviv where he promised unwavering solidarity to US ally Israel after the surprise October 7 offensive by Hamas, who killed over 1,200 people and took about 150 more hostage. The United States has publicly blessed reprisals by Israel, which on Friday called for the immediate relocation of 1.1 million people in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, which is already under an Israeli blockade. Israel has killed more than 1,400 people in strikes in the Gaza Strip since the Hamas attack and has cut off food, water and electricity. Qatar, where Blinken will head immediately after Jordan, has longstanding ties with Hamas and has been seen as an intermediary in freeing the hostages. «We'll continue pressing countries to help prevent the conflict from spreading, and to use their leverage with Hamas to immediately and unconditionally release the hostages,» Blinken said late Thursday in Tel Aviv. «We'll also discuss how we can continue to make real our affirmative vision for a region that's more peaceful, more prosperous, more secure, more integrated. »In fact, that is the choice, and the choice in some ways has been made even more stark by the actions of Hamas." Saudi Arabia in the weeks before the attacks had spoken of progress in US-led diplomacy to normalise relations with Israel — a landmark step for the

A fissured land: Israel, Palestine and Hamas
What is the genesis of this crisis? It’s an incendiary mix of politics, religion and economics. Modern Palestine was populated with Jews from the global diaspora—a British imperial drive—in 1948. Around 750,000 Palestinians were expelled as Jews captured 78% of the land.

Israel-Hamas war that claimed more than 1,500 lives on both sides so far. “It was Hamas' stated purpose to annihilate the state of Israel and kill Jewish people. There are moments in this life – and I mean this literally – when pure, unadulterated evil is unleashed on this world.

US President Joe Biden pledges military support for Israel amid Hamas attack, raising questions about aid for Ukraine
Gaza Strip. His promise raised questions about whether Washington can ramp up defense aid to Israel without jeopardizing aid for Ukraine, especially given Republican lawmakers' ouster of House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy and failure so far to name a replacement. Biden administration officials insist Washington can absolutely do both, but acknowledge there will be challenges.

Who is Vivian Silver, Canadian-Israeli peace activist presumed held by Hamas?
Vivian Silver’s son was anxiously texting with his mother on Saturday morning, as Hamas gunmen closed in on her home near Israel’s Gaza border. Her last message read: “They’re inside the house.”The 74-year-old Canadian-Israeli spent her adult life campaigning for peace and human rights for Palestinians, particularly those living in impoverished Gaza.Silver is now presumed to be a prisoner, among the dozens of civilian hostages held by Hamas following the militant group’s coordinated weekend attack on Israeli soil.“This is almost surreal to think that someone who dedicated their entire life to building peace, ending the occupation, lifting the siege of Gaza, is kidnapped by Hamas,” said Ariel Dloomy, Silver’s former colleague at the Arab-Jewish Center for Equality, Empowerment and Cooperation, in an interview with Global News.Silver grew up in Winnipeg and moved to Israel in the 1970s.

Trudeau dials leaders of UAE & Jordan on Nijjar row
Trudeau on Monday reached out to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and discussed the India-Canada row since Trudeau alleged probable Indian hand in the death of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in June. The UAE is a close economic and counter-terror partner of India in the Gulf region and Trudeau’s act is seen as an attempt to create pressure on India through New Delhi’s allies. «On the phone today, his highness @MohamedBinZayed and I spoke about the current situation in Israel. We expressed our deep concern and discussed the need to protect civilian life,” Trudeau posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Disputed site of Al-Aqsa Mosque a factor in Hamas attack on Israel
Hamas, Al-Qassam Brigades, described Saturday's surprise assault on Israel as an operation «in defense of the Al-Aqsa Mosque,» invoking a dispute around a site that is sacred to both Muslims and Jews and that is among the most deeply contested in the holy land. The mosque sits in a 35-acre site that is considered the holiest in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam. Muslims call the site — which also includes the Dome of the Rock shrine — Haram al-Sharif, or the Noble Sanctuary. According to Islamic scripture, the Prophet Muhammad traveled from Mecca to the mosque in one night to pray, and then ascended to heaven. Jews call the site the Temple Mount, because it was the location of two ancient temples that were destroyed. Israel captured East Jerusalem and the Old City, which contains the site, during the Arab-Israeli War of 1967, then annexed it, but most countries consider it to be occupied territory. The mosque is administered by the Waqf, a trust controlled by Jordan, under a status quo agreement. Israeli security forces maintain a presence on the site, and Jews and Christians can visit, but for years they were prevented from praying on the site to prevent clashes. More recently, Israeli police have quietly allowed Jews to pray there.

Region reacts as Hamas attack on Israel spirals
Hamas attack targeting Israel and the retaliation that followed, but others blamed Israel itself and some celebrated the surprise assault. The early morning Hamas offensive by air, land and sea was met by Israeli air strikes on the blockaded coastal enclave, in the bloodiest escalation since May 2021. «We are at war,» Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, promising that «the enemy will pay an unprecedented price». Here is a roundup of reactions from the region: — Egypt - The foreign ministry appealed to «both the Palestinian and Israeli sides to exercise the utmost restraint», warning of the «dire danger of ongoing escalation». Cairo has historically been a key mediator in conflicts between the two sides. Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry made a series of calls to regional and international leaders, including his Jordanian, UAE, Turkish, German and French counterparts, and to European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. A foreign ministry statement said Shoukry sought to rally «international actors» to «intervene immediately». — Jordan - Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned of the «volatility» of the situation, «particularly in light of what cities and areas of the West Bank are witnessing of Israeli attacks and violations against the Palestinian people». The Hamas assault follows months of surging violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with fatalities in the occupied West Bank reaching a scale not seen in years. Jordan and Egypt were the first two countries in the region to agree peace deals with Israel. — UAE - The United Arab Emirates called for «an immediate ceasefire» and «exercising the utmost restraint,» state news agency WAM reported. «The UAE has expressed its sincere
