As the AI race heats up, nations must join hands to restrain the five horsemen of an AI apocalypse
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk—a recent Economist article describes them as the small, powerful group of five men who will determine the path along which artificial intelligence (AI) evolves. Their fellow AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, who invented the neural network system that enables AI models to learn like humans, quit Google in 2023 to alert the world that while further development of AI could lead us to a utopian future, it could equally lead us to a dystopian one.

Are we at a turning point in world history? Here's why one shouldn't bet on it
The turmoil of the last year-and-a half— tariff wars and physical wars (Iran, Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine), the abduction of a head of state and assassination of another, territorial ambitions and tattered alliances—has led to claims that the Pax Americana of stable global institutions managing commerce and conflict has ended. If that is true, what comes next? This uncertainty has fostered many forecasts of the future of global politics by policy pundits.Consider the analysis of Hal Brands, a historian at Johns Hopkins University and the American Enterprise Institute.

Israel unbound

Iraq agrees to supply Lebanon with fuel for six months
Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said in a statement on Saturday, renewing a deal meant to alleviate Lebanon's acute power shortage. Under the heavy fuel oil deal, first agreed in July 2021, Iraq provides the Lebanese government with the fuel in exchange for services including health care for Iraqi citizens. Lebanon then swaps the heavy fuel oil for gas oil that it can use at its power stations. These have operated for decades at partial capacity, but electricity provision deteriorated further during a financial crisis that has hit the state's ability to buy fuel.

Israel fires on Lebanon after rocket attack in heaviest exchange since truce with Hezbollah
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said it instructed the army to respond forcefully against dozens of targets in Lebanon, where the Iran-backed Hezbollah is based. Israel's army said six rockets were fired toward Metula, a town along the border with Lebanon. Three crossed into Israel and were intercepted. The army said it «cannot confirm the identity of the organisation that fired the rockets.» It said it struck Hezbollah command centres and dozens of rocket launchers. An Israeli strike on the southern Lebanese village of Touline killed five people, including a child, and wounded 10 others, including two children, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported. Another Israeli strike Saturday night hit a garage in the coastal city of Tyre, the NNA reported, with one person killed and seven wounded. It was the first attack on the city since the ceasefire took effect November 27. And a strike on Hawsh al-Sayed Ali village along the border with Syria wounded five people, according to the NNA.

A look at Israel's multilayered air defense as military says it shot down missile from Yemen
No injuries were reported. The Houthis said they fired a ballistic missile at Israel's international airport, the second such attack since the United States began a new campaign of airstrikes against the rebels earlier this week. Over the decades, Israel has developed a sophisticated system capable of detecting incoming fire and deploying only if the projectile is headed toward a population center or sensitive military or civilian infrastructure. Israeli leaders say the system isn't 100% guaranteed, but credit it with preventing serious damage and countless casualties. Here's a closer look at Israel's multilayered air-defense system: The Arrow: This system developed with the U.S. is designed to intercept long-range missiles. The Arrow, which operates outside the atmosphere, has been used to intercept long-range missiles launched by the Houthis as well as those launched by Iran during two direct exchanges of fire last year.

'Hassan Nasrallah has very high values': Deported doctor had ‘sympathetic photos’ of Hezbollah leaders on her phone
Rasha Alawieh, a Brown University assistant professor and doctor, was deported over the weekend from Boston to Lebanon after federal agents found pictures of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iran’s supreme leader on her cell phone. Despite holding a valid visa and a court order blocking her deportation, she was returned to Paris while re-entering the US, alleging her ties to Hamas. This incident has raised concerns about US Customs and Border Protection's actions and judicial authority.
