Nuclear weapons stopped invasions. Then Ukrainian troops poured into Russia.
Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk isn’t just a brash bid to upend Russia’s invasion. It also marks the first time that a declared nuclear power has faced invasion and occupation by another country. For decades, nuclear-escalation theory has presumed that countries with atomic weapons were largely immune from attack because an aggressor risked triggering armageddon.

Turkiye to submit request to join genocide case against Israel in UN court
United Nations court on Wednesday to join South Africa's genocide lawsuit against Israel, a Turkish official said. The declaration of intervention will be submitted at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the official said on condition of anonymity in accordance with regulations. Turkiye, one of the fiercest critics of Israel's actions in Gaza, will become the latest nation to seek to participate in the case. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has frequently compared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler, accused his country of genocide, called for it to be punished in international courts and criticised Western nations for backing Israel.

How Israel’s ‘poisoned toothpaste assassination’ method took decades to expose
Israel-Palestine conflict has been marked by numerous controversial tactics, one of the most notorious being the 'Hannibal Directive,' which allows for the use of excessive force to prevent the capture of Israeli soldiers, even if it endangers hostages. Another controversial tactic was the 1978 assassination of Palestinian leader Wadie Haddad by Mossad agents using poisoned toothpaste. Wadie Haddad, head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), was implicated in several high-profile attacks, including the 1976 hijacking of Air France Flight 139, known as the Entebbe Hijacking. The plane, diverted from Tel Aviv to Paris, was then taken to Libya and Uganda. Israel’s response, Operation Thunderbolt, was a successful rescue mission led by Lt Col Yonatan Netanyahu, who tragically lost his life in the operation. Mossad’s Mission

What does it mean to recognise Palestinian statehood?
Israel on October 7th, that “terrorism pays". Ireland, Norway and Spain are joining the majority of countries: almost three-quarters of members of the UN recognise Palestine. What exactly does that mean—and who are the holdouts? There are no binding rules about when one country should recognise another, but international law provides some guidelines.

Many extreme events of 2023 in line with predictions of warmer world, study finds
heat extremes could become an «emerging feature» of a warmer planet, according to a new study. The new research that reviewed the weather and climate of 2023 also said that many of the extreme events experienced last year are consistent with predictions previously made about a warmer world. Putting the events of the warmest year on record in perspective, researchers said that in a warmer future, more events involving record-breaking hot temperatures occurring earlier in the year, and cyclones exacerbating rainfall extremes are in order. Change in seasonality of extreme events too is another trend the researchers observed.

Mint Explainer: Why Opec+ is extending production cuts till June

Crude oil price (Brent) has stayed below $100 a barrel since August 2022, after the sharp rise in the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. While it has largely held above $80, the price dipped to the low seventies a few times in the past year.

IMF's Kristalina Georgieva says she's confident on global economic outlook despite uncertainties
World Governments Summit in Dubai, Georgieva said the IMF would publish a paper on Monday that shows phasing out explicit energy subsidies could save $336 billion in the Middle East, equivalent to the economies of Iraq and Libya combined. She added that in addition to savings, eliminating regressive energy subsidies "discourages pollution, and helps improve social spending," in a copy of the speech published on the IMF website.

Advocating for the well-being of Zo people amidst Meitei radical challenges: Zomi Council Steering Committee's memorandum to PM
Zomi Council Steering Committee (ZCSC) submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister highlighting the plight of the Zo people — the Hmars, the Kuki-Zos and the nine Zomi tribes — who continue to bear the brunt of Meitei radicals. The ZCSC letter described how the Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei militia group, after radicalizing and then subsequently militarizing the 700-odd square miles of Meitei ancestral territory within the last eight months, have influenced 39 Meitei representatives — 37 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAS) and two Members of Parliament (MPs) — to take an Oath favouring the desires of the militia group. The memorandum explained how the Oath commissioned by Arambai Tenggol is a pledge by the Meitei MLAs and MPs to further the State sponsored ethnic cleansing pogrom on the Zo ethnic tribes and is no different from relinquishing of the Indian State of Manipur to a group of armed Meitei radicals. The entire Oath-taking exercise testified the collapse of democracy and all forms of governance in Manipur, a case similar to Afghanistan, Libya, Gaza, etc. where armed militias took over the elected government.
