Samvardhana Motherson shares rise 4% as company sees limited impact from US tariffs
Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd (SMIL) advanced 3.8% to their intraday high of Rs 137 on the BSE after the company stated that the recently announced US tariffs on imported products, including automotive components, are not expected to materially impact its financials at present. In a regulatory filing on Thursday, SMIL informed exchanges that a significant portion of its products supplied to U.S. customers are either manufactured domestically within the U.S. or are compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Based on this, the company has assessed that the Executive Orders issued by the U.S. government imposing tariffs are unlikely to have a significant financial effect.

TRADING DAY-Investors find auto motive for caution
Trump escalated the global trade wars with his plans to slap aggressive tariffs on auto imports from next week. There was no uniform flight to safety, however, even though gold leaped to a new high, as mounting inflation concerns pushed up Treasury bond yields. My column below shines a light on the rather surprising resilience shown by currencies of the countries that will be hit hardest by Trump's auto tariffs.

Donald Trump blasted by global leaders over auto tariffs. Will US President hold or withdraw duties order?
Donald Trump's steep tariffs on imported vehicles and parts, vowing retaliation as a widening trade war intensifies, as per a report. Major car exporter Germany urged a firm response from the European Union, while Japan said it «will consider all options», AFP reported. The US duties take effect starting April 3 and impact foreign-made cars and light trucks. Key automobile parts will also be hit within the month. Global stock markets plummeted with automakers like Toyota, Hyundai and Mercedes leading the plunge. In New York, shares in General Motors tumbled with Ford and Stellantis also declining. France Finance Minister Eric Lombard condemned the «hostility,» saying the only solution for the European Union is to «raise tariffs on American products in response.»

China and India sources for fentanyl inputs: US report
China as «sources of precursors and equipment for drug traffickers» and the primary source country for illicit fentanyl precursor chemicals and pill pressing equipment." The '2025 Annual Threat Assessment (ATA)', released on Tuesday, is the Intelligence Community's (IC) official, coordinated evaluation of an array of threats to US citizens, the homeland, and US interests in the world. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids remain the most lethal drugs trafficked into the United States, causing more than 52,000 US deaths in a 12-month period ending in October 2024, it said. Fentanyl is a potent opioid drug that is blamed for widespread drug addiction in the US. The Trump administration has initiated a crackdown on illegal import of fentanyl and also linked it with tariffs adjustments in case of some countries. The report said some transnational criminal organisations (TCOs) are producing and trafficking large amounts of illicit drugs, imperiling American lives and livelihoods.

How companies are responding to Trump's tariffs
Trump said automobile tariffs are coming soon even as he indicated that not all of his threatened levies would be imposed on April 2 and some countries may get breaks. Potential price hikes, changes in sourcing locations and new U.S. plants are among the actions planned since Trump unveiled the tariffs and threatened potentially more levies. HIGHER PRICES * Best Buy warned of the possibility of higher prices for American shoppers. «The giant wildcard obviously is how the consumers are going to react to the price increases ...,» CFO Matt Bilunas said on a call with analysts.

India's business growth dipped in March due to weaker services demand, PMI shows
manufacturing expansion failed to offset a slowdown in the services sector, a private survey showed on Monday. HSBC's flash India Composite Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by S&P Global, slipped to 58.6 in March from February's final reading of 58.8, lower than a Reuters poll's median prediction of 59.0. The 50-mark divides growth from contraction. The manufacturing PMI index increased to 57.6 from 56.3, remaining in the expansion territory for more than three-and-a-half years. But the dominant-services sector's PMI index fell to 57.7 from 59.0 in February, contributing to the fall in the overall index.

Borderless? Think again as notion of unfettered globalisation is tenuous
borderless world' was first propagated by Kenichi Ohmae, author of The Mind of the Strategist, in the 1990s. He predicted an era in which national boundaries would become less significant, and the free flow of goods, services, capital and information would define global trade and commerce. His theory embodied the zeitgeist of late 20th-century trade. The dawn of the 21st century appeared to vindicate his foresight, with trade liberalisation, tech breakthroughs, and MNCs propelling the globe toward economic interdependence. But the question now is whether idealism survives the political opportunism. The Trump administration's tariffs and economic nationalism raise the question of whether the era of a borderless world is coming to an end. With political slogans such as 'America First', and MAGA, Trump seeks to recalibrate trade dynamics by imposing punitive tariffs on imports from countries like Canada, Mexico, India and China.

Canadians are 'egg-static' over US egg shortage, serving up trolling memes while America scrambles. Here are the funniest ones
With egg costs reaching nearly $10 per dozen in some U.S. cities while Canadian shelves remain fully stocked at prices as low as $1.84 USD, the contrast is too much for the internet to resist. Memes mocking the egg crisis have gone viral, with some comparing the situation to the U.S.'s previous stance on not needing anything from Canada. One viral tweet summed up the irony perfectly: «MAGA: ‘We don’t need anything from Canada!’ Moments later… ‘U.S. begs nations for eggs’»

US trade tariffs and its impact on global commodities
Trump are challenging the global commodity market, making prices highly volatile. The recent US tariffs on countries like Canada, Mexico, and China have raised concerns over a global trade war, as Canada and China have already imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products. Bullion was the asset that benefited most due to the tariff war. Gold in the key London spot market is hovering above the psychological level of $3,000 an ounce, gaining more than 15 percent so far this year. Similarly, Indian gold prices also gained considerably, with the MCX futures prices trading at a lifetime high of ₹88,800 per ten grams last week.

Nike's comeback plans threatened by tariffs, overstocked shelves
Nike's turnaround effort is hitting snags as the company tries to clear out old inventory while feeling the effects of a growing trade war. The sportswear maker signaled further declines in revenue and profitability due to an ongoing merchandise reset that the company says is necessary to renew growth. Nike also expects gross margin to decline sharply in the current quarter from a year earlier, in part due to US tariffs on products from China and Mexico. Chief executive officer Elliott Hill, a longtime Nike executive who came out of retirement to take the top role in October, is looking to guide the company back to growth after a difficult year of falling sales and corporate layoffs. He's reshaping Nike by refocusing on sports and mending relationships with its retail partners. Nike is in the midst of clearing out stale merchandise through heavy discounting as demand fades for some of its biggest sneaker franchises, including Air Force 1s and Dunks. Inventory fell 2% in the period but Chief Financial Officer Matt Friend said those levels remain «elevated across all categories.» The company is trying to turn things around against a backdrop of weak consumer spending and fallout from President Donald Trump's escalating trade war. China also remained a weak spot, with sales missing analyst expectations amid a prolonged consumer slump in the market. But performance in North America and the region that includes Europe, Africa and the Middle East came in better than expected.
