World wide web of schools for our young: Indian students' dream to study abroad remains a steady one
Indian students are intent on adding that foreign education experience on their CV. As Canada, Britain and Australia set conditions and caps for foreign students, Indians are looking elsewhere. Barring the US, which continues to dominate the destination wishlist, students are now opting to study in countries that were previously not on their list for reasons such as language barrier, strict work-study norms and higher financial requirements. As some of the traditional favourite education destinations limit entry, others, particularly non-English-speaking countries, are improving the 'ease of onboarding international students'.

Scientists discover 120-million-year-old Earth section: Here's how it could change what we know about our planet
tectonic plate that was thought to be lost for millions of years has been discovered in Borneo by geologists, bringing new insights into Earth’s ancient history. The plate, named Pontus, dates back 120 million years, according to a study led by Suzanna van de Lagemaat, a graduate geologist at Utrecht University, and her supervisor, Douwe van Hinsbergen. The discovery, based on geological data collected from the mountainous regions of Borneo, sheds light on the movements of tectonic plates that once formed part of the Earth’s crust. Van de Lagemaat said, «We thought we were dealing with relics of a lost plate that we already knew about. But our magnetic lab research on those rocks indicated that our finds were originally from much farther north, and had to be remnants of a different, previously unknown plate.»

Quad summit this weekend, Australian PM Anthony Albanese appears to have broken ranks with the US and Canada, co-members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, on the issue of Indian «spies» in Australia by pointing out that such matters are raised privately. Responding to media queries during his ongoing US trip on the «nest of Indian spies» in Australia, Albanese said, «Well, what I do is act diplomatically and have those discussions, and that will, no doubt, be something that is raised.

Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli open up about their faith in the divine
Gautam Gambhir and star batter Virat Kohli is not their tremendous records, but their on-field aggression and sheer passion for the game, which make them formidable opponents. Both Gambhir and Kohli may come across as tough players who have won many matches for India and are true inspirations for budding cricketers due to their various qualities. However, when it comes to drawing their inner strength in times of need, both turn to God or the divine. Flying, walking, watching: Track the anthropologist's (carbon) footprint
The shortest flight I ever took was from Tongatapu, capital of Tonga, to 'Eua, an island some 40 km farther away. On paper, the ferry takes 1.5 hrs. But its schedule is unreliable, the sea unruly, locals advise against it, and the black diesel smoke enough to make one nauseous. The longest flight we were on took us from Qatar to New Zealand, though fortunately, this was in a luxurious Qatar Airways Qsuite. Flying business class does account for three times more CO2 than roughing it in economy though.

Hindi Diwas 2024 significance, history and 50 wishes, messages and images to share on WhatsApp, Facebook
Hindi Diwas is celebrated every year on September 14 across schools, colleges, and various institutions in India. The day marks the adoption of Hindi as the official language of India, a decision made by the Constituent Assembly on September 14, 1949. This historic vote was crucial in establishing Hindi’s significance within the Indian administrative system. The date also coincides with the birthday of Beohar Rajendra Simha, a renowned Indian scholar known for his illustrations in the original manuscript of the Indian Constitution. It was on his 50th birthday that the Constituent Assembly formalized Hindi as the official language, and later, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru declared September 14 to be celebrated as Hindi Diwas. The celebration of Hindi Diwas aims to promote the use and understanding of Hindi across the nation. While Hindi is primarily spoken in India, its influence extends to countries like Fiji, Mauritius, Singapore, and New Zealand. In addition to Hindi Diwas, World Hindi Day is observed on January 10 to commemorate the first World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur in 1975, which brought together delegates from 30 countries to promote the language globally.

New Zealand seek to exploit Afghanistan's red-ball inexperience in one-off Test
New Zealand will aim to exploit Afghanistan's relative inexperience in red-ball cricket, in the one-off Test starting here from Monday, and gather momentum ahead of their upcoming World Test Championship challenges in the sub continent. New Zealand's first-ever Test against Afghanistan will kick off a challenging couple of months for the Black Caps who play six long-format matches on the bounce in the subcontinent, something they haven't done in 40 years. With their underwhelming subcontinent record in mind (40 losses in 90 matches), New Zealand would want to hit the straps straightaway.

Don't worry, your mobile phone won't give you brain cancer, says new WHO report
World Health Organization (WHO) has found no link between mobile phone use and an increased risk of brain cancer. The analysis, covering studies from 1994 to 2022, concluded that despite the rise in mobile phone usage, there hasn't been a corresponding increase in brain cancer incidence. This review was conducted by 11 investigators from 10 countries. The review assessed the effects of radiofrequency used in mobile phones, as well as in TVs, baby monitors, and radar. Co-author Mark Elwood, professor of cancer epidemiology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, said, «None of the major questions studied showed increased risks.» The researchers investigated cancers of the brain in both adults and children, as well as the pituitary gland, salivary glands, and leukemia. They looked into risks linked to mobile phone use, base stations, or transmitters, and occupational exposure.

Tourism in India grew 300% YoY in 2023, said MakeMyTrip executive officer Rajesh Magow. «We have to create awareness and change the perception of the country, because people (tourists) also worry about security and safety.» Tourism in India is only at 85% of what it was in 2019 before the Covid pandemic hit, he said.
