Flying, walking, watching: Track the anthropologist's (carbon) footprint
The shortest flight I ever took was from Tongatapu, capital of Tonga, to 'Eua, an island some 40 km farther away. On paper, the ferry takes 1.5 hrs. But its schedule is unreliable, the sea unruly, locals advise against it, and the black diesel smoke enough to make one nauseous.
The longest flight we were on took us from Qatar to New Zealand, though fortunately, this was in a luxurious Qatar Airways Qsuite. Flying business class does account for three times more CO2 than roughing it in economy though.
