Exclusion of KL Rahul from two Asia Cup games throws a spanner in India’s World Cup preparations
KL Rahul won’t be travelling with the Indian team to Pallekele today and is set to miss the first two games of India’s Asia Cup campaign that begins on September 2 against Pakistan, head coach Rahul Dravid informed during a press conference on Tuesday. The Karnataka batter is not “fully fit” and will stay back at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to work on his fitness in a bid to be available for the Super 4s stage of the six-team tournament. That means Rahul won’t be in action before September 6. The last date to submit preliminary squads for the ICC Men’s World Cup is September 5. India would hope it is only a (yet another) bump in the road and not an end of the road.

Pakistan ex-PM Imran Khan's graft conviction suspended, but no quick release
Imran Khan's recent conviction on corruption charges, his lawyer Naeem Panjutha said, but it will not lead to his release as a judge has ordered his detention in another case. The 70-year-old former cricket hero has been at the centre of political turmoil in the crisis-ridden nuclear-armed state since his ouster in a parliamentary vote of confidence in April 2022, and his relations with Pakistan's powerful generals have deteriorated badly over the past year. Khan was imprisoned on Aug. 5 after being sentenced to three years jail for unlawfully selling state gifts during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

Neeraj Chopra has won every title the sport has to offer. Now, it's time for a do-over
U20 World Championships gold. Check. Asian Championships gold. Check. Commonwealth Games gold. Check. Asian Games gold. Check. Olympic gold. Check. Diamond League trophy. Check. World Championships gold. Check. This is not a wish list of a teenager made right after watching a motivational movie. Or a shopping list of a soon-to-be bride. This is what Neeraj Chopra’s trophy cabinet looks like after his Sunday night triumph in the World Athletics Championships finals in Budapest, Hungary. Throw in a couple of silver medals he won at last year’s World Championships and Asian Junior Championships in 2016, too, and you have a treasure box that’s never been seen in India. Chopra threw his javelin 88.17m in his second out of six attempts. No one from the 12 strong finals line-up could breach the mark as Chopra became the first Indian ever to win a gold at the World Athletics Championships. The closest was Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem (87.82). When he won silver at the World Championships in Eugene, US, last year, he had said, “Yeah, but it’s not gold.” Well, it is now. The hallmark of Chopra’s ‘golden’ career has been his ability to gauge the conditions better than his competitors. In every competition there have been players with better personal and season best throws but Chopra has always managed to win on the big day. He had arrived in Budapest having played in just three competitions this year. He had hurt his groin in one of those competitions. According to Sportstar, Chopra barely threw a javelin in practice to avoid any possibility of hurting that muscle again. “I was thinking a bit about my groin injury. I was being careful, and my speed was not 100%,” he said. He still won.

India must focus on education and infra for growth: Moody's report
India, and they would need to focus on education and infrastructure to take advantage of the demographic dividend, according to the latest report by Moody's Investor Service. «The ability of sovereigns to address these challenges will determine the extent to which their large populations can take advantage of opportunities to enhance long-term economic growth,» the ratings and research firm said in a report released Monday. While it appreciated the efforts made by India and the Philippines on infrastructure and governance, the firm noted that considerable work needed to be done on parameters like education and labour force participation. «There remains a considerable gap in the quality of education between Pakistan, Bangladesh and India compared with China and other peers in Southeast Asia, which contributes to labour-force participation imbalances,» the report said. The report pointed out that while the six large economies would contribute to a third of the global population increase over the next two decades and contribute significantly to the global labour pool, it said that «population growth unaccompanied by adequate job creation is likely to exacerbate sovereigns' exposure to social risks. According to the United Nations, India crossed China this year to become the most populous country in the world, and its population shall take another 40 years to reach its peak.
