Yet to make any formal request to join BRICS: Pakistan
Pakistan has tried to downplay the snub from the BRICS, saying it has not yet made a formal request to join it after the bloc ignored Islamabad when it announced its major expansion in years. On August 24, The leaders of the BRICS nations decided to admit Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as the new members of the grouping, sealing a long-drawn process. Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch issued the details of her weekly briefing on Friday night, a day after the bloc of developing countries added new countries. «We will examine the latest developments and make a determination about our future engagement with BRICS,» Baloch said. To a query, if Pakistan was ignored by the bloc, she said Pakistan followed BRICS' developments in its latest summit in South Africa and also noted its openness to inclusive multilateralism. «Pakistan is an ardent supporter of multilateralism and as a member of several multilateral organisations it has always played an important role in global peace and development,» she said. The spokesperson termed Pakistan as an important developing country that has made «important contributions to promote peace, solidarity and cooperation among countries of the South». «We shall continue our efforts at the international fora for fostering the spirit of international cooperation and revitalisation of inclusive multilateralism,» she said. BRICS initially composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa has undertaken major expansion taking its members to eleven, making it more representative of the Global South. Reportedly several countries are queuing up to join the group but Pakistan may face a challenge due to the presence of India which enjoys

Rahul Gandhi prone to making baseless, absurd comments: BJP
BJP on Friday rejected Rahul Gandhi's charge that China has encroached on Indian territory as baseless and absurd, as it asserted that it is the opposition party which has committed «historic, unpardonable crime» in dealings with Beijing. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi quoted from selected works of first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru to say that his government had sent over 3,500 tonnes of rice in 1952 for the consumption of the Chinese Army which was «starving». He also asked the Congress to release its reported agreement with the Chinese Communist Party when the UPA was in power. Addressing a press conference, he alleged that the decision to send rice for the Chinese Army when India's relations with China had started getting strained was not a mistake but a «historic and unpardonable» crime. Gandhi has a habit of making baseless and absurd comments about China, he said, adding that the former Congress president makes remarks on India, its people and the RSS in a similar vein. During the Doklam crisis, he had met the Chinese ambassador, Trivedi said. The BJP leader asserted the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has notched up unprecedented success in its handling of India's military, diplomatic and economic affairs. The Congress has always tried to weaken the country when in the opposition, he said and asked the party to learn from the BJP which supported the then governments during crisis involving neighbours be it Pakistan or China. While the Congress government refused to punish Pakistan for its support to terrorism as it thought that this will harm peace talks, Modi's policy is that terror and talks cannot go together.

Arrest of Indian fishermen by Pak: SC refuses to intervene, says political matters will be sorted out politically
Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea that raised the issue of Indian fishermen getting arrested after straying into the territorial waters of Pakistan, saying political matters will be sorted out politically. The apex court said it cannot issue directions to Pakistan to release such fishermen and that the matter cannot be determined in a petition filed under Article 32 of the Constitution. Article 32 of the Constitution empowers Indian citizens to move the apex court directly for enforcement of their fundamental rights through appropriate proceedings. «Is this to be determined in a (Article) 32 petition? How Pakistan and India sort out their fishermen problem, in (Article) 32 petition we will issue directions? Can we issue directions to Pakistan to release them?» a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia asked the counsel appearing for the petitioners. The bench was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by three petitioners, including two from Gujarat and one from Maharashtra. The counsel for the petitioners sought the revival of a judicial committee comprising judges from India and Pakistan that was formed in 2008 to mutually resolve the issue of prisoners, including fishermen who got arrested for straying into each other's maritime territory. «What is the scenario today? What is the relationship with the country today?» the bench asked, and added «These are government issues.» «Political matters will be sorted out politically,» the bench said and asked the petitioners to approach the government.

UK news anchor says India shouldn't ask for foreign aid after Chandrayaan 3. Indians remind him of $45 tn Britain looted from India
Chandrayaan 3 mission has started a Twitter war after a UK-based news anchor opined that Delhi should not be asking for foreign aid following the successful moon mission. Following which, many infuriated netizens reminded him of the $45 trillion Britain looted from India in the past. It all started after the UK's GB News anchor, Patrick Christys, congratulated India on its moon mission and then asked the country to return the 2.3 billion pounds it got as foreign aid. «I would like to congratulate India on landing on the dark side of the moon. I would also like to invite India to return the 2.3 billion pounds of foreign aid between 2016 and 2021.» He added that the British taxpayer should also withhold the proposed 57 million pounds of foreign aid that the UK set to send to India next year. «We should not be giving money to countries with a space program. As a rule, if you can afford to fire rockets to the dark side of the moon, you shouldn't be coming to us with your handout,» he added.
