US Navy helicopters repel Houthi attack on Maersk container ship in Red Sea
US Navy helicopters sank three of four small boats used by Iranian-backed Houthi militants to attack a Maersk container vessel in the southern Red Sea, the U.S. military said on Sunday. Helicopters from the USS Eisenhower and USS Gravely, responding to distress calls from the Maersk Hangzhou, returned fire on the Houthi boats in self-defence and sank three of the vessels with no survivors, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

Yearender 2023: Yearender 2023: Children fall out of focus as Israel-Hamas conflict drags on for more than two months
Jama Masjid Shahi Imam on Israel-Palestine conflict, says ‘Muslim world not…’ While the long trail of death and devastation in the sleepy kibbutzes of southern Israel sent shockwaves across the globe, among the unarmed civilians who were mercilessly slaughtered by the masked gunmen were children. At least 33 children, including some barely months old, lay dead in their cots in the wake of the October 7 attacks, with their throats slashed or bodies carved open. And, as if that wasn't enough, an estimated 40 children were taken as hostages by Hamas terrorists.

PTI. "The Muslim world has not lived up to its responsibilities in this regard and is not doing what it should and this is very unfortunate. In the end I hope that the prime minister of my country shall, by virtue of his personal relations with the prime minister of Israel, exert diplomatic pressure to put an end to the war and resolve issues," he said as quoted by PTI.

Needing labor, Israel recruits workers from India, Sri Lanka
Workers from South Asia are heading to Israel, whose need for labor has become more pressing since the Hamas-led attack in October. Israel's government closed crossings from the West Bank, cutting off thousands of Palestinians from work, and many of the foreign workers whom Israel relies on to operate its farms and construction industry left. Most of the roughly 30,000 foreign agricultural workers in Israel were from Thailand, dozens of whom were kidnapped or killed on Oct.

Airstrikes hit camps in central Gaza as Biden administration approves new weapons sales to Israel
Gaza on Saturday, as the Biden administration approved a new emergency weapons sale to Israel despite persistent international cease-fire calls over mounting civilian deaths, hunger and mass displacement in the enclave. Even a brief halt in fighting seems out of reach. A senior Hamas official told The Associated Press in Beirut on Saturday that the group has not budged from its position that a permanent cease-fire has to be the starting point for any further releases of Israeli and foreign hostages the group holds, which runs counter to a recent proposal by Egypt for a staged end to the war. It's a demand Israel is bound to reject. Israel has said it will pursue its unprecedented air and ground offensive until it has dismantled Hamas, a goal viewed by some as unattainable because of the militant group's deep roots in Palestinian society. The United States has shielded Israel diplomatically and has continued to supply weapons.

Joe Oliver: Helpful New Year’s advice Justin Trudeau likely won’t heed
I have to be one of the last people Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would accept year-end advice from, ahead of only his almost-certain successor, Pierre Poilievre. And I’m not really interested in helping the Liberals recover from their death spiral. But in the spirit of “country over party,” here goes.

Mass exodus in Central Gaza as IDF advances
A Palestinian journalist posted pictures of Israeli tanks near a mosque in a built-up area of Bureij which had apparently advanced from orchards on the eastern outskirts. Further south, Israeli forces struck the area around a hospital in the heart of Khan Younis, the Gaza Strip's main southern city, where residents feared a new ground push into territory crowded with families made homeless in 12 weeks of war. Palestinian health authorities said 210 people were confirmed killed in Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours, raising the toll of the war to 21,320 dead — nearly 1 percent of the enclave's population. Thousands more dead are feared to be buried or lost in the ruins. Israel has escalated its ground war in Gaza sharply since just before Christmas despite public pleas from its closest ally the United States to scale the campaign down in the closing weeks of the year. It launched the war to destroy the Hamas movement that runs Gaza after fighters rampaged through Israeli towns on Oct.
