Taiwan on Saturday as a «stern warning» after voicing anger over a stopover in the United States by the island's vice president, William Lai. Lai, who is the frontrunner in Taiwan's presidential election next year, stopped in New York and returned via San Francisco on a trip to Paraguay, one of a dwindling number of nations that diplomatically recognise Taipei.

China's military began drills around Taiwan on Saturday, saying it was a «serious warning» to separatist forces, in an angry and widely expected response to a visit of Vice President William Lai to the United States. Lai, the front-runner to be Taiwan's next president at elections in January, returned from the United States on Friday, where he officially made only stopovers on his way to and from Paraguay, though he gave speeches while in the country. China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, despite the strong objections of the island's government.

William Lai returned on Friday from a sensitive visit to the United States, thanking Taiwanese people supporting a trip he said showed the island's «self confidence» venturing into the international community. «Because of everyone's hard work, Taiwan's power is stronger and stronger, and it showed the international community that Taiwan is a force for good, that the international community really pays great attention to Taiwan,» he said.

William Lai for making stopovers in the United States calling him a «troublemaker», China’s Defence Minister Li Shangfu on Tuesday cautioned against “playing with fire” when it comes to Taiwan, Chinese Defence Ministry reported. In an apparent attack at the US, Li cautioned any attempts to “use Taiwan to contain China,” and said it would “surely end in failure,” China's defence Ministry said in a statement and Xinhua news Agency quoted.
