Mint Explainer: How Indian volunteers ended up fighting for Russia
A few Indians caught in the Russia-Ukraine conflict have sent desperate pleas back home asking to be rescued, saying the Russian military had hired them as helpers but coerced into fighting in the war. Out of roughly 100 Indians hired by the Russian military, at least one has been killed in battle. The Indian government is scrambling to secure the discharge of these individuals.

Security Council 'perhaps fatally' undermined by Gaza, Ukraine deadlock, says UN chief
United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Monday deplored how the U.N. Security Council had failed to respond adequately to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, saying the conflicts had «perhaps fatally» undermined its authority. Speaking at the opening of the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, Guterres said the U.N. Security Council often found itself deadlocked and «unable to act on the most significant peace and security issues of our time». «The Council's lack of unity on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and on Israel's military operations in Gaza following the horrific terror attacks by Hamas on 7 October, has severely — perhaps fatally — undermined its authority,» he said.

'Inaccurate reports': MEA disputes reports of Indian nationals seeking discharge from Russian army
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a statement regarding the plea of four Indian youth who were allegedly forced to join the Russian army and are now stranded in Russia along the war-torn Ukraine border. Expressing concern over the situation, the MEA clarified its stance on media reports regarding Indian nationals seeking discharge from the Russian army. According to the MEA, every case brought to the attention of the Indian Embassy in Moscow has been strongly taken up with the Russian authorities. Similarly, cases brought to the attention of the Ministry have been addressed with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi. This effort has resulted in several Indians being discharged, with the MEA reaffirming its commitment to actively pursuing all relevant cases of Indian nationals for an early discharge from the Russian army.

After two years of war, Ukrainians are becoming pessimistic
Ukraine war Wavering economic and military support from the West means things are likely to get worse. Ukrainian officials are increasingly nervous about the figures: cashflow, mobilisation numbers, weapons. Serhiy Marchenko, the finance minister, says he believes his country’s Western partners will come good on this year’s non-military budget of $37bn—Ukrainian taxes pay for military expenses—but he is worried about what happens next.

Key European economy Austria sets up Startup Bridge with India
Austria, an export-oriented economy, is increasingly targeting South Asia and SE Asia with India topping the list to export its products including machinery, chemical and pharmaceutical products, automobile related items, said Martin Kocher Austrian Minister for Labour and Economy. “Austria is focusing on South Asian and SE Asian markets in a big way since the Russian market has been closed following the war. India is of special interest to Austria given its complementarities in the field of economy. Austria also serves as the gateway to the German speaking markets of Europe,” Martin Kocher Austrian Minister for Labour and Economy told ET during his weeklong visit to India for the Raisina Dialogue.

AI-generated propaganda as effective as original propaganda, finds new study
propaganda is almost as effective and persuasive as real propaganda, a team of researchers have found after a study involving more than 8,000 US adults. They also warned that propagandists could use artificial intelligence (AI) to expose citizens to many articles, thereby increasing the volume of propaganda and making them harder to detect. For the study, researchers at the Stanford University and the Georgetown University in the US identified six English language articles, which, according to investigative journalists and the research community, likely originated from Iranian or Russian state-aligned covert propaganda campaigns.

Trump calls himself a 'proud political dissident' in CPAC speech
Trump cast November's presidential election as «judgment day» and declared himself a «proud political dissident» during a speech before conservative activists outside of Washington Saturday as he again cloaked his campaign in religious imagery. Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference on the day of South Carolina's Republican primary, Trump painted an apocalyptic vision of the future if President Joe Biden wins a second term as the two prepare for an expected rematch election.

US Presidential Elections: Here's how Trump won in South Carolina and what it could mean for his chances in November
US Presidential Elections 2024: Donald Trump won over South Carolina Republicans as the candidate who voters believe can win in November, keep the country safe and has the mental capability to be president. Trump cruised to victory in the South Carolina primary with the support of an almost unwavering base of loyal voters. AP VoteCast found that Republicans in the state are broadly aligned with Trumps’s goals: Many question the value of supporting Ukraine’s fight against Russia; overwhelming majorities see immigrants as hurting the U.S.

Trump wins South Carolina, easily beating Haley in her home state and closing in on GOP nomination
Donald Trump won South Carolina's Republican primary on Saturday, easily beating former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley in her home state and further consolidating his path to a third straight GOP nomination. Trump has now swept every contest that counted for Republican delegates, adding to previous wins in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The former president's latest victory will likely increase pressure on Haley, who was Trump's former representative to the U.N. and South Carolina governor from 2011 to 2017, to leave the race. A 2020 general rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden is becoming increasingly inevitable. Haley has vowed to stay in the race through at least the batch of primaries on March 5, known as Super Tuesday, but was unable to dent Trump's momentum in her home state despite holding far more campaign events and arguing that the indictments against Trump will hamstring him against Biden.
