Why logistics are too important to be left to the generals
artillery. Such foul-ups revealed deeper problems. All modern armies use two approaches to logistics, explains Ronald Ti, a military logistician at King’s College London: “pull" logistics, which involve responding flexibly to consumption and demand signals by units in the field, and “push" logistics, in which ammo and material are dispatched based on predetermined rates of use.

Xi's absence raises doubts about the future of the G20
G20 summit. Spin doctors are at pains to push the unofficial line that Xi’s absence isn’t a big deal for New Delhi by, among other things, deflecting the public gaze to what Indian diplomacy calls “bandobast" and has perfected like an art. But all the intricate details of the décor at the venue, the logistics, the vegetarian-only menus, the silverware, and how the capital has been lit up in hot pink cannot change the fact that Xi’s absence is significant.

Russia holds elections in occupied Ukrainian regions in an effort to tighten its grip there
The voting for Russian-installed legislatures in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions begins Friday and concludes Sunday. It has already been denounced by Kyiv and the West. «It constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, which Russia continues to disregard,» the Council of Europe, the continent's foremost human rights body, said this week. Kyiv echoed that sentiment, with the parliament saying in a statement that the balloting in areas where Russia «conducts active hostilities» poses a threat to Ukrainian lives.

China is flooding the world with cars
China’s exports are faltering and its consumers are spending less at home, the country is flooding the world with cars. Overseas demand for inexpensive vehicles made in China, mostly gasoline-powered models that Chinese consumers now shun in favor of electric cars, is so great that the biggest obstacle to selling more abroad is a lack of specialized ships to carry them. Chinese automakers have leaped to dominance in Russia since war began in Ukraine, transporting cars by train. The companies have also captured large shares of markets in Southeast Asia, Australia, South America and Mexico.

At Sherpa meet, G20 members agree to phase down unabated coal power
G20 members late Thursday agreed to make an effort towards the “phasedown of unabated coal power”, staying with the text of the Bali declaration on the issue. This was decided at the Sherpa-level deliberations that aim to finalise the text for the Leaders’ Declaration. India’s proposal to expand it to “phase-down of fossil fuel” ran into stiff opposition from Saudi Arabia and Russia, people aware of the deliberations told ET. The “phasedown of coal power”, agreed on in earlier declarations, is in the context of energy efficiency and in line with national circumstances, and does not impinge on India’s energy security, the people said. The cue was taken from the Bali declaration where the phrase “phasedown of unabated coal power” found agreement among all members. The language has also been used earlier in the UNFCCC Glasgow Climate Pact and the Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan. Unabated coal power is generally understood to mean coal power without carbon capture utilisation and storage. There was no mention of a phasedown of coal power at the outcome of the G20 Energy Transition ministerial meeting in July, a prelude to the leaders’ summit.
