While the premise may sound similar to the first film, unexpected events occur that set it apart. Similar to «Bird Box,» «Bird Box Barcelona» alternates between the present timeline and events that occurred nine months earlier, providing insight into Sebastián and Anna's journey. However, the story concludes in the present timeline without any further leaps into the future. This means that «Bird Box Barcelona» concludes more than four years before Malorie and her children arrive at the community depicted at the end of «Bird Box.» This explains Malorie's absence in the new movie as she is dealing with the same creature-related challenges simultaneously with Sebastián and Anna.
