MEXICO CITY (Reuters) — Hurricane Hilary hurtled towards Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Sunday, blanketing the region with heavy rain amid warnings of catastrophic and life-threatening flooding on the peninsula and in the U.S. Southwest.

Hurricane Hilary was downgraded on Saturday as a Category 1 hurricane even as the phenomenon has disrupted sports games and flights across the United States. The Hurricane was moving towards Mexico's Baja California peninsula and US agencies have raised warnings of heavy rainfall and flooding in many areas.

As of Saturday morning, Hurricane Hilary was situated approximately 240 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. The National Hurricane Center has categorized Hilary as a «large and powerful» storm, characterized by maximum sustained winds clocking in at 130 mph, as per a report in USA Today. Early on Saturday, the National Weather Service in San Diego noted that Hilary had accelerated and deviated slightly eastward in its trajectory. Consequently, the period with the most pronounced impacts from the hurricane is projected to span from Sunday morning until evening. In light of these conditions, the National Weather Service is advising residents to take precautions such as securing valuable items in and around their homes and refraining from driving on roads that are submerged due to flooding.

Shia LaBeouf is set to debut on stage in a new play by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet. The play, titled "Henry Johnson," will be directed by Marja-Lewis Ryan, known for her work on «The L Word: Generation Q.» The venue for the premiere will be The Electric Lodge in Venice, California. The cast includes David Paymer, who has been nominated for an Academy Award, along with Dominic Hoffman, a frequent collaborator of Mamet and Evan Jongkeit from Broadway, taking on the role of Henry Johnson. «I'm grateful to work with David Mamet,» said LaBeouf. «His talent is unmatched, and it's an honor to collaborate with one of the greatest living playwrights. 'Henry Johnson' is a unique story that has inspired and challenged me as an actor. Marja's guidance and Evan's mentorship have been invaluable in my growth as a performer. This experience has deepened my respect for the power of storytelling. I'm thankful for the opportunity to learn and create with them.» The play revolves around a man whose life is disrupted by an act of kindness. The premiere is scheduled for September 1, 2023. Mamet commented, «According to Constantin Stanislavski, directors who alter the text miss its essence. Many directors merely teach English and rely on stage managers. May God bless Ms. Ryan.» The play will run from September 1 to 24.
