Louisiana town of Garyville after a refinery reported a fire and leakage in its chemical storage tank. Marathon Petroleum has claimed that the leakage has been contained after the crew responded to the leakage of naphtha, a flammable liquid that can be used as fuel. St. John the Baptist Parish officials said that evacuation is mandatory for all residents of the area within a radius of two miles. Marathon Petroleum Corp. also has asked all the residents living in a radius of one mile to evacuate temporarily. In a statement, it said, “As a precautionary measure, St. John the Baptist Parish is requiring residents within a one-mile radius of the part of the refinery closest to the fire to temporarily evacuate to locations the Parish is making available.” It said further, “As always, our main priority is to ensure the safety of our employees and contractors, our neighbors within our surrounding community, first responders, and to limit environmental impact.”

In the wake of this devastating loss, the Bishop requested prayers for Father Mark, his family, friends, and the parishioners who are grieving the loss of their cherished pastor. According to law enforcement reports, a fatal car accident occurred on Interstate 55, north of the state lines between Louisiana and Mississippi, at approximately 1.30 pm. Tragically, the accident resulted in the death of a Catholic priest. According to the initial reports from Mississippi Highway Patrol, Father Mark was traveling south on Interstate 55 when his car veered off the highway, hitting a median and then a culvert. Tragically, the car overturned in the accident, and Father Mark Beard lost his life at the scene. Sources close to Father Mark revealed that he owned a property in Mississippi and frequently visited it. A Rosary ceremony in honor of Father Mark was conducted at St. Helena Catholic Church on the evening of August 2.
