Syrian President Bashar Assad arrives in China on first visit since the beginning of war in Syria
Syrian President Bashar Assad arrived in China on Thursday on his first visit to the country since the start of Syria's 12-year conflict during which Beijing has been one of his main backers. China's foreign ministry said Assad would attend the opening ceremony of the Asian Games, an international sports event beginning Saturday in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou. Assad's office said earlier that the Syrian leader was invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping for a summit and would bring with him a high-ranking Syrian delegation. China has been expanding its reach in the Middle East after mediating a deal in March between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and it continues to support Assad in the Syrian conflict, which has killed half a million people and left large parts of the nation in ruins. China could play a major role in the future in Syria's reconstruction, which is expected to cost tens of billions of dollars.

The Gulf’s boundless ambition to change the world
our Briefing explains, these shifts begin a new chapter in the Middle East marked by fresh opportunities and new dangers. The region’s leaders are testing ideas that have caught on in much of the world, including embracing autocratic pragmatism as a substitute for democracy, and multipolar diplomacy instead of the post-1945 American-led order. The Middle East is also a place where threats that will menace the world in the 2030s may play out early, including nuclear proliferation, extreme weather and even greater inequality, as weak countries fall further behind.

Syrian children return to school amid deep economic crisis
economic crisis. But many children do not have classrooms to go to in a country where many educational facilities have been damaged or destroyed and 90 percent of people live under the poverty line according to the United Nations. Syria's education ministry on Saturday called on schools «not to enforce strict school uniforms (...) and to reduce the necessary supplies» for students, the SANA state news agency reported. These measures were introduced «in light of the difficult economic conditions facing the country and as part of an effort to reduce the financial burden on the population,» SANA said. «More than 3.7 million students are starting the 2023-2024 academic year, spread across 14,505 schools,» added the outlet.

UK news anchor says India shouldn't ask for foreign aid after Chandrayaan 3. Indians remind him of $45 tn Britain looted from India
Chandrayaan 3 mission has started a Twitter war after a UK-based news anchor opined that Delhi should not be asking for foreign aid following the successful moon mission. Following which, many infuriated netizens reminded him of the $45 trillion Britain looted from India in the past. It all started after the UK's GB News anchor, Patrick Christys, congratulated India on its moon mission and then asked the country to return the 2.3 billion pounds it got as foreign aid. «I would like to congratulate India on landing on the dark side of the moon. I would also like to invite India to return the 2.3 billion pounds of foreign aid between 2016 and 2021.» He added that the British taxpayer should also withhold the proposed 57 million pounds of foreign aid that the UK set to send to India next year. «We should not be giving money to countries with a space program. As a rule, if you can afford to fire rockets to the dark side of the moon, you shouldn't be coming to us with your handout,» he added.
