Piyush Goyal suggests BIMSTEC group members to relook proposed FTA
Piyush Goyal on Wednesday suggested the seven member countries of the BIMSTEC bloc to relook at the progress of Free Trade Agreement talks which are moving at a very slow pace. He said that the members can think of negotiating a preferential trade agreement instead of a full-fledged free trade pact. BIMSTEC stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. Its seven members are five South Asian countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka) and two Southeast Asian countries (Myanmar and Thailand). The bloc has been negotiating a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) since 2004.

Thailand is betting its hand for you to visit and gamble millions; Indians may get a new attraction
Draft rules for the legalisation of casinos, which include an initial 30-year casino license with a 10-year renewal option, have been published for public feedback until August 18. The casinos will be part of large entertainment complexes featuring hotels, convention centers, and amusement parks, among other amenities. Thailand would thus join the ranks of the United Arab Emirates and Japan in vying for a share of the global casino industry, estimated to have generated $263 billion in revenue last year. Major players like Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. and MGM Resorts International have shown interest in opening casino resorts in Thailand, considering it a strategic move against the uncertain prospects in Macau. Las Vegas Sands Corp. expressed interest in entering the Thai market, stating last month it would consider expanding to Thailand if the opportunity arises.

Add richness to dal and dessert with coconut milk
subzis (poriyal) or to grind the masala for kootu (dal-vegetable dish) or avial, coconut milk was not used in my grandmother’s kitchen. Even in the Kerala-inspired olan (ash gourd and black-eyed peas curry), she would prefer to add some ground coconut and regular milk. It was possibly to avoid the extra work of grating a coconut and extracting coconut milk.

Apple reports record quarterly revenue in India despite smartphone shipment dip
Apple on Friday reported yet another quarterly revenue record in India for the third quarter ending June 29, 2024, continuing the high pace of growth in the world’s second largest smartphone market where consumers are continuing to buy premium products. Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook told analysts in its third quarter earnings call that Apple has set “quarterly revenue records in more than two dozen countries and regions, including Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, the UK, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.” The bullish performance by the iPhone maker is when smartphone shipments in India fell 2% year-on-year in the June quarter as per market tracker Counterpoint Research which attributed the decline to the heatwave, seasonal slump, and a sequential slowdown in demand from the March quarter before.

Posing as ‘Alicia,’ this man scammed hundreds online. He was also a victim.
MAE SOT, Thailand—In late December, Guracha Belachew Bersha helped lead a small but brazen rebellion. He’d been enslaved for 16 months in a twisted new criminal empire in which Chinese gangsters traffic people from around the world, often to remote and lawless parts of Southeast Asia, and force them to sit at computers all day scamming strangers online. The cyber frauds they’re forced to commit are called pig butchering, named for the way the perpetrators fatten up their victims by gaining their trust before taking their money and cutting them loose.
