markets security Trade War country outbreak India and Russia eye dynamic rupee-rouble rate, vostro balance to bypass dollar trade barriers
Russia are exploring the idea of a dynamic reference rate to start a rupee-rouble market, along with allowing greater deployment of the rupee balance that has accumulated in course of trade between the two countries since outbreak of the Ukraine war. A reference or exchange rate is aimed at overcoming the dollar trade barriers raised by US sanctions imposed on Russia in February 2022. These, along with putting in place a payment confirmation mechanism, are expected to figure during a meeting of senior central bank officials and bankers in Moscow this week, two industry persons told ET. study abroad platforms including CollegeDekho, iSchoolConnect, Leverage.biz, Career Mosaic, among others told ET that Indian colleges have lately become safer bets or at least a back-up option for students considering international markets for education. The reasons: protests escalating into violence, political unrest, tighter visa policies, geo-political tensions and economic slowdown in many of the study abroad destinations for Indian students, said experts. Nations like Canada, Australia and the UK that are home to the bulk of Indian students have tightened visa policies leading to higher rates of rejection. Others like Russia, Ukraine, Bangladesh and even some regions in the UK and the US are grappling with either public unrest or geopolitical tensions, making them unattractive.

COST CEO Cycling country cover reports Things at HDFC weren't going according to plan post merger, says MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan
HDFC faced a hostile banking landscape following the merger in 2022, HDFC Bank MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan was quoted as saying by a ToI report on August 10. Jagdishan acknowledged that the banking landscape changed dramatically after the lender decided to merge with parent HDFC in April 2022, but he defended the decision. Speaking at the bank’s annual general meeting, Jagdishan highlighted that the global economic situation had shifted, altering their initial growth projections due to tighter liquidity conditions and shifts in consumer preferences. Jagdishan noted that the bank's decision to merge had initially factored in growth rates based on a benign liquidity environment. However, this changed after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced a series of repo rate hikes from May 2022, starting with a 40 basis point increase, in response to rising commodity prices following the Ukraine invasion. These rate hikes, totaling 250 basis points, alongside RBI's measures to drain surplus liquidity, increased deposit costs for banks, impacting HDFC Bank significantly as it needed to raise deposits not only for incremental growth but also to cover HDFC's erstwhile assets.
